    Have you had a refund?

No. A replacement is scheduled for a month from now. Generous or not, the onus is still on the customer. It's not really a CS way to resolve a mistake.
  • Cant you use the matresss they have given you for free until the new one arrives?

Then simply set fire to it in your front garden.

Incredible. It's not unreasonable to ask what my rights are in terms of knowing what I can expect from argos in resolving their error.

Seems most people are interested in making personal, and unfounded, judgements.

The error has been resolved! They have given you the mattress, brand spanking new and FREE OF CHARGE! Wow! They are sending a replacement. Only you can make yourself feel judged. Draw a line. Move on and be satisfied - big scheme of things it's minuscule.

That's your view foggster. The reality is I've been stuck with a mattress I can't use and have to shift somehow. Some people might see it as a freebie. Good for them. When I have so little time it's an imposition I can do without. It shouldn't be much to ask for Argos to take it away next Saturday as it was their mistake. As has been helpfully pointed out, I have no written assurance argos have given me licence to dispose of it anyway.

Powerful_rogue, our bed is 4ft and flanked by cupboards. It won't fit.

As someone already mentioned, stick an ad on gumtree or in your local newsagent either giving it away for free or for a good discount on the shop price and I would be amazed if you still had it a couple of days later. (but as you said, only when you have Argos's offer in writing)

Alternatively your local social services or Salvation Army would be glad of it.
  • Why don't you sleep on it and decide what to do in the morning.

  • Stick it on Freecycle, it'll be gone by tomorrow. You're making this worse than it has to be.

The written confirmation is actually pretty important. I asked the CS manager if I would receive any confirmation of the reorder and their offer. He was evasive.
