MOT Advisories

Can someone please tell me what these mean? They're advisories from my MOT and I'd like to know what they are for future reference.

Nearside suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement.

Offside front Macpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment.

Rear fog light switch poor

Your rear foglight switch is probably going to be eyeing up a pay-day loan soon - so watch out!
Would you say that to a stranger's face in the street? No? Then why type it on a forum?

They are just advising you of future problems, not failing the car but next year they may well have gotten worse and will cause a fail.

Something to budget for in the next 12 months or get sorted out at the next service. Show the adversery sheet to the garage and they can quote for the works.

  • I'll get it sorted but I don't want to pester the mechanic I use with these questions, I'd rather ask you lot :P

I'm aware by the way what an advisory is ;)

  • Well if you have the tools and skills you could probably sort them bits yourself.

If you jack up the car with a trolley jack and have a play with a lever bar, you should be able to see what it up and order the bits from a motor factors.

Someone can just tell me what they are. I'm sorry but I don't know what a rubber bush is on the arm of the suspension and why movement in it is undesirable. If someone could maybe just tell me what they are?

    Please? :)

The suspension arms are basically metal bars that are attached to the body at one end and the wheel hub at the other, using moveable joints to allow the wheels to go up and down. The joints usually take the form of rubber bushes (effectively a block of rubber with a hole for a bolt) at the inner (body) end and metal ball-joints at the outer (wheel) end.

Over time the rubber deteriorates and, eventually, can let the inner end of the arm move in directions it's not supposed to - like in / out or backward / forwards. When that starts to happen the handling and road holding will be affected and tyre wear will probably get nasty.

An advisory on these is often given as soon as there's any sign of the rubber perishing, which can be many years before it causes a problem. It's all down to the tester on the day. Certainly not one to panic about - if you have a garage you use regularly and trust then ask them to have a quick look next time it's booked in.

What is wrong with your rear fog light switch? That will speak volumes about the veracity of the advisory list.
Too many crap NTs, new to the job, never been techs and sheer jobsworths committing fantasy faults to MOT records nowadays.
Find an honest, friendly, local MOT centre and always use it.
  • I'm pretty sure it's missing because I didn't know I had one :D

  • Every UK car has a rear fog light, maybe the switch is hiding.....Import cars have a random fog fitted with an add on switch.

    What car is it?

Not all. Most, yes. But not all.
