closed linked to imgburn - you need this disc-burning prog to burn the .iso file to a dvd. You don't open the .iso file. Once the iso is burned to disc, you boot the laptop from the dvd which starts the win8 installation process
oops, double-posted with ND......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
As before, if your PC has a Combo drive that writes only to CD, you will need to use Rufus in combination with a 4GB USB Flash drive, to utilise as installation media instead of DVD.0

Im downloading imgburn but cannot see where to tick the box to NOT INSTALL google toolbar. I've got tick boxes for icons and shortcuts and install for all users.
Also is type of install full or custom?..0 -
I've tried to install dvd on laptop but product key does not match any of the windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key...0

Hi just to let everyone know on this thread that I am sending this message from my Toshiba satellite laptop. Success - although it has been hard going for both me and the people who have helped me. Thank you to everyone especially Nifty Digits (I have pmd you but your inbox if full). Total cost of 32 pounds for a hard drive.
Just one more question, Ive just realized that keyboard is US and should be English - how would I change it? Also one more do I change bios back to enable secure boot and uefi?..0 -

Changing Your Keyboard Layout in Windows 8
You can certainly try to re-enable UEFI.
If there are any missing Drivers and Applications, you can get them from the Toshiba Support website.0 -

From here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspxTo boot your PC in UEFI mode, you'll need to use a drive formatted using the GPT drive format.
If the computer came with Windows 8 and originally booted in UEFI mode, the disk would originally have been formatted using the new GPT file system.
If the OP installed Windows 8 on a new disk, and it's working with the BIOS in Legacy mode, then I'm pretty sure the disk will have been formatted using the older MBR system, by the Setup process (or the disk came with MBR).
I don't fully understand the whys and wherefores, as things like Windows 8 Setup DVDs will boot in either UEFI or Legacy mode, but perhaps it's a restriction in Windows 8?
But the upshot is that I wouldn't be surprised if the computer now won't boot in UEFI Boot mode, and the OP shouldn't worry too much about it (and switch it back to Legacy).
Edit: In trying to understand the story of GPT, MBR and UEFI, I just came across another technical article about Windows and GPT which has a lot of info about how it all works.

The OP used a USB drive which correctly created, should work with UEFI.
Perhaps the wrong settings were used in the first place.
This is indicative of the correct settings.
Then all existing partitions should be deleted.0 -

As I understand it, once you get into Windows 8 Setup, it detects whether the Setup disk/USB was booted in UEFI mode or Legacy mode, and formats the partitions accordingly.
So for instance from here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspxTo wipe and convert the drive [to UEFI/GPT] by using Windows Setup
{steps snipped}
Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows detects that the PC was booted into UEFI mode, and reformats the drive using the GPT drive format, and begins the installation.
The only way I know of to switch to GPT and hence UEFI is to wipe the disk and start again with the BIOS in UEFI mode. I'm not convinced the advantages of UEFI are worth that bother though.0 -

Have you tried
I registered just to say thank you. I've been stumped all morning with a Toshiba hard drive replacement and this was the only fix.0
