If you have been able to take the disk out, "brush" it and put it back in again, why would you need to pay someone else to put a new one in?

I've put a new hard drive in. We now need to load up the windows8 disc. I've been on ebay and there is a reinstall recover/repair cd which says that I can reinstall using the serial number on bottom of my laptop and am willing to do that if I know this is the right route.

I don't think there is enough ram 512 mb? on the desktop to down load win 8. Looking to buy a reinstall recover win 8 cd but at £5.45 on ebay don't know if this is what I need. Seems too cheap. When I spoke to the company he said the serial number is on bottom of computer so should be able to use the disc????

very difficult to work out what is going on as facts are being dripfed into the thread over weeks, and being done in the background via pm

I've been helped on here via pm but an update on my situation is that we ascertained hard drive broken so have replaced that. Got a download of win 8 but not enough memory on desktop to download it all onto disk. Just given details of system and desktop information to see if we can do anything to complete the download before I go out and buy a new win 8. Very helpful advice on here.

512MB of ram doesn't prevent you downloading anything, what do the the words in bold mean?

if nifty has given you a download link, use it, or ring up toshiba, and tell them their hard disk has failed, and you want a free recovery disc.

in future, creating recovery discs and doing disc image backups with macrium reflect on all machines, would save you a lot of hassle

As you know, there is no 'Serial Number' for Windows 8 at the bottom of your laptop.

Fix the problem with your currently machine as suggested.

    Virtual Memory

How much space is left on your hard drive?

Im back. Ive spent the last three nights following instructions on here. Ive cleared my hard drive space to make it go faster. Ive tried "closed" speed up a computer, because when Ive tried to download the win 8 to disc it was telling me not enough virtual memory so thought would clear some of the things on the hard drive. Ive tried upping the virtual memory and Im going to try one last time to download mega win 8.

Nifty digits question how much free space 73% on hard drive 110 out of 149gb.

Closed. My commit charge before speed up was 512280, limit 1268996, peak 561140 Commit Charge was 499m/1239m CP~U usage 100% Processes 37. Physical Memory 523760, Available 185496, System cache 121628. After clean up CC Total 266800, limit 1269004, peak 357852 Physical Memory 523760, Available 181028, System cache 169516. 31 process cpu usage 0% Commit charge 275/1239. Now Ive upped the virtual memory it is commit charge 372m/2017m if that makes a difference. I have also got copies of hijack my logs before and after.

Can I thank you for your help. I havent been able to continually be on mse as son and hubby have been interrupting me but I do appreciate how frustrating it is when help is given and results are not posted straight away. We have fitted the hard drive which is a plus and want the win 8 now but then that set me off on the desktop computer which needed fixing. Think going to buy win 8 off toshiba and hopefully laptop will start working and then we wont use the desktop much.

SUCCESS .... Managed to download the full win 8 and will need to burn it to cd - tomorrow. and see if it works in laptop. Will update after Ive done this.

I ve just tried to open it and following message

    File Type: CD-ROM Image
    File Extension: .iso
Description: Standardized disc image stored in ISO-9660 data format contains complete disc file structure, including files, file attributes, and boot code.

    post your "after" hijackthis log

clearing hard disk space doesn't make it go faster, (you had plenty of free space anyway), but reducing startup bloat and or upgrading ram will.

virtual memory min 512, max 2048 should work .

Why not just follow the simple instructions that I have supplied, instead of flying off at a tangent?

Does any of this ring a bell?
Should save to your Downloads folder.

When complete, you'll need to burn it to a blank DVD.

Do you have Image Burning software?

    Windows 7 has it inbuilt.

    If not;

Burn the .iso file(image) to DVD using ImgBurn(download and install. Take note to not install the Google Toolbar by removing the relevant tick). You have to Burn Image to Disc, not burn Data disc.

    Here is a Guide(skip step 2b).

Where it is written that you should try to open it?

If your PC does not have a DVD burner, you will need an empty USB flash drive of at least 4GB.
