Toshiba satellite c850 laptop no bootable device please restart system

Laptop having some problem at the moment, tried pressing power button and f2. F10. F11 repeatedly but the screen is dark grey with check media fail then comes up with no bootable device please restart the system. Don't know what to do now as nothing on screen to either refresh or restart the system. I've tried taking hard drive out and cleaning it up but no difference. Would be glad of any advice. Thank you. Btw two months out of one year warranty

sounds like a faulty hard disk

what do you mean by cleaning it up?

"check media fail" exact error message?

holding down the power button for 6 seconds to turn off, then back on, should put something on screen

You DID create the recovery disks when you first got it..didn't you. Can you get into the BIOS by pressing F2 at startup. As closed asked, Cleaning the hard drive. How? Did you mean you wiped it. I have the C850 too and if you haven't wiped the partitions there is a recovery partition on the hard drive. You might have to disable "Secure Boot".

Brushed it to get dust off. Don't know whether recovery disks were created. Would it come up on the screen? How would I disable secure boot. The screen is black

Checking media. (Fail). No error message. Have tried holding down power button it brings up Toshiba innovation sign, I then press f2 and that is when checking media comes up

Try turning off. Leave for just a few seconds then turn on and press F12 a few times while booting. A list of bootable devices should appear. Select HDD and see what happens. If nowt then restart again and press F12 and in the list look for HDD Recovery, normally at the bottom. To disable secure boot. Start and press F2 then look down the first list for Secure Boot. If it isn't on the first page it'll be on the second. Then press F10 to save settings and it'll restart. Also sometimes I have to wait about 5 or 10 minutes with the grey screen before a boot process begins so allow some time for this.

Is the laptop yours? I ask because as the owner surely you would remember creating the recovery disks? Most new laptops nag their owner from the first time they are switched on to create recovery media which can be dvds or a usb flash drive. If you (or the owner) didn't and the hard disk has now failed you have no way of recovering the original installation.
Whatever you will need a new laptop hard drive and a copy of win 7 or 8 depending on the licence on the bottom of the laptop. You would also need to download all the drivers for that model from the Toshiba support website and save them to a flash drive. Plenty of guides on the net for doing windows installations. Lastly. you may need to do a telephone activation of windows as you won't be using a Toshiba OEM disk.

Got a bit further error code Then went off. Tried again and is preparing automatic repair. Now a grey screen will leave for ten mins. I have disabled secure boot and done it again. Now back to grey screen

I didn't set the machine up. It's my sons and his dad set up. I don't think a recovery was set up. I'll check it out tomorrow. If we need a new hard drive and the other things how much would that be approx. thanks anyway

You can also try turn off and leave for a few seconds. Hold the zero key and quickly tap the start button. If the recovery partition still exists it might appear, then follow on screen prompts. A new HDD is sub £100 but you want to exhaust all other avenues. We don't know if your present drive is U/S and putting a new one in will have the same problem. Also make sure that you put the drive back in properly.
