At the risk of generalising; I find that the prevailing tone of the MSE boards is neatly divided between those where people are trying to make something (a profit, an investment tip, the chance of a bargain) and those who are trying to lose something (a debt, weight). Boards where something can be gained are typically full of sarcastic smartarses, boards where something is to be lost are typically full of gentler souls looking to make friends
Credit where it's due with Grumbler, he doesn't gain anything by taking newbies through their first steps over and over again
Ps. Well done on the tasty profit.0 -
Thats interesting, Ed, to view the boards like that! I think you might be on to something too.
As for Grumbler - I *did* compare him to Stephen Hawking, y'knowI think he's being extremely generous with his time and experience. But most of the time its like listening to Stephen Hawking explaining the 11 dimensions of string theory - fascinating, but not quite comprehensible
:o:o - and the fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves
DT - yes, its terrifying! And you can't do first steps in m.b. and a new business at the same time. I've already done m.b. once, so its not the *principle* I'm trying to get, its the practicalities, e.g. I didn't realise that the sportsbook and backing on the exchange weren't the same thing - and thats so basic to a long time regular that my lack of knowledge was incomprehensible. For us beginners, its the Johari window - you don't know *what* you don't know, because you know so littlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johari_window
But, um, Ed - I didn't follow through on the bet, I've got to join another exchange firstI'll do it for Saturday, for sure.
Goldie - we're on the way now
Toerags at my bank still haven't answered my message ... what would they do if it was urgent? Pah ...
anyway, just off for a pootle around the boards2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Be aware that Smarkets offer a SUB, make sure you do it right for extra profit
Yes, BF Sportsbook and Exchange are very different beasties, odds are terrible on the SB!
*Edit: Thank you for introducing me to a new concept, I'd never heard of a Johari window before, interesting.0 -
You're very welcome
But there's also a concept I don't know in your post ... SUB ... ah! Signing Up Bonus!!! Yes
:j
I'll have to do the lay for BF first, hopefully that'll be okay, but I'll check at the start of the process, naturellementWon't be today, I have a normal amount of work for an employed person today
Checked my bank last thing last night, not done it this morning, but I've got time to faff around online before I start the serious work
See you in a bit ...2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
I'm learning some interesting concepts on this thread.
I'm very much in a Johari window at the moment. I know literally nothing about MB, except the basic principle.
'The Sportsbook', is a term that I last heard in Las Vegas casinos.... I seriously thought it was something to do with betting on baseball and American football. It clearly isn't that, as it has a meaning in this country too. But as to what The Sportsbook' is in this country I have no idea.
I have a long way to go before I'd be comfortable with doing a live matched bet. Extensive reading, hanging around the right forums to understand the lingo, and some dummy runs before I go live.
It'll be many months before I'd dip my toe in the live waters - maybe I'll never quite get there, I don't know yet. But it's interesting to learn about something new.
I like Ed's observation about the MSE boards, and I think it's generally very true.
I also think it can be a bit competitive and judgemental in some areas about who can feed their family on a tenner a week or who can hold out the longest without heating their homes, so I tend to avoid that sort of thread.
What I like about MFW and DFW is that everyone is very accepting - we are all on different income levels and at different stages at our lives, but trying to reach our personal goals. Nobody tries to impose their own views or values on others. We are all free to be our selves here - it's brilliant really !Early retired - 18th December 2014

I just thought I'd make a quick post on your thread, Karmacat, I hope you don't mind as it marks a very sad occasion. I wasn't sure where to post it or whether to start a thread about it. I hope you understand.
It was a year and a few days ago that an important part of our 'virtual' lives (and in many cases 'real' lives too), Anne, known as taxi73 lost her spirited battle with cancer. She was an inspiration to many of us even before her illness with such good advice, humour and kindliness. I remember 'seeing' you on her diaries, Karmacat, as well as some of your other posters, and just thought it would be a nice idea to remember her here.0 -
She was indeed a big part of all our lives. Taxi was one of the last posters on one of my diaries.
She has been on my mind a lot this last week due to reading about Linda Bellingham, who had a similarly generous spirit. She isn't forgotten and is remembered with fondness and affection.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -
CBC, and BOB, thank you for posting about taxi. I'd no idea it had been a year - lots of us talked about it at the time, and you and I did in particular, CBC, I remember. I'm glad you posted here.
I think about taxi quite a bit. She was ten years younger than meshe'd had heartbreak in her life, and found joy in her little grandson, JJ, that she used to write about on here.
I know the original memorial thread was locked (or at least, thats what Martin said, and I'm sure it was done) ... but its lovely to have taxi's memory amongst us again. Goldie, she'd have egged you on with the m.b., no doubt about it!
Here's to taxi, whose name was Anne, who lost the fight but did not lose the war, because she was loved, and admired, and she made a difference in this world, to her family, and to her online communities, both on here and in her breast cancer forum.
Goldie, I'll write again later about the m.b.ing and the Johari window - I think I want to have a little walk in the fresh air and the green grass right now.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Right, back again ... a little meditative walking does wonders.
Goldie, I wouldn't be comfortable doing a live matched bet myself right now, no way no how!!! As I probably said on Ed's or your thread at one stage, my m.o. was to set everything up a few days in advance, then come back 24 hours later and see if my maths workedIt nearly always did, but once I caught myself out. And I only ever did the simple stuff - no "if lose then ..." stuff, or dutching, or anything. Though I may have to, this time.
Dummy runs ahoy! I'm setting things up tomorrow, hopefully, as I've got a good span of time to do it, and if I can I'll do a dummy run in the morning, and the real thing in the afternoon. Making sure I take advantage of the SUB2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
'Dutching' - I just had to google it. I don't think I'll ever be doing that.
'Sharbing' is another thing I don't think I'll ever be doing.
If I do it, it's going to be very simple. I don't want to tie myself in knots:eek:
Just been reading about Taxi, so I went had a look at some of her posts.
She genuinely sounds to have been a lovely person, and helped lots of people. How sad that she passed so youngEarly retired - 18th December 2014
