Good luck with Elance and glad your meeting went well :T.

How's the mould looking (or should I say hopefully not looking :D).

Its a self employment marketplace, Al, for all sorts of things, where freelancers and people with jobs can mix and match :)

    Thanks Gally :)
How's the mould looking (or should I say hopefully not looking :D).

    :D

Slow plodding :o I treated the floor on the formerly-wet-side-of-the-porch - or rather, I treated the vinyl. Underneath the vinyl, the hardboard is now lumpy and bumpy, whereas it was flat when it was laid :o so its swollen and there must be mould underneath :( I don't really know what to do, so when I've finished the cleaning, I'll scout around, do some research and get in the builders who did the repointing last year. Shed will need to take a back seat, if there's work that needs doing ...

Didn't apply for any elance jobs - this week is my busy one, I need all my focus for work. Didn't sleep particularly well last night, for no particular reason, so am displeased now :D

Its my *extremely* busy version of Wednesday today, tho at least the washing machine is on, and sun is forecast :j being very mindful of creating more damp inside the house ...

    Hi KC!

Did you get lost in the sunshine?

Saw this book and thought you'd like to have a looky!

    :D:D:D

Glad to hear you are tackling the mould!!!:T:T:T

I've been doing the same - we moved some of our bookshelves to the new place & I was horrified:eek: to find the black stuff on the wall and floor - have used the strong remover/killer & have had the dehumidifier going for three days! Three tubs full have been emptied and it's filling up again!

Does the hardboard feel wet? Was it laid before the work was done - could it be it just warped and is now dry?

Do you have a dehumidifier? Might be worth investing in one? If you've had a damp problems for years then depending on how the property is built the moisture can linger for years unless dried out properly.

Excellent advice about using a dehumidifier:T. We've got 2 but they are just small domestic ones and I seem to be forever emptying them:eek:. It's amazing how much moisture is in the air even with ventilation.

We once hired a heavy-duty one from a tool-hire place and kept it running day and night for the whole week that we had it. It was the sort they use to dry out homes after flooding etc. We just sited it centrally in the house and left as many internal doors open as possible. A bit inconvenient (and so noisy:eek:) but worth it in the end. Amazing how much water it extracted in that time:j.

It didn't eradicate the problem but it must have lessened it. I still had to tackle the mould afterwards and it's constantly reappearing. Might re-hire one and give the place a good 'go' though.

What are you like :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Fascinating that LP are muscling into the market - and I've just been writing about needing a sense of humour :D Not buying tho, sorry RT - every time I even *look* at my purse, a siren goes off, to remind me not to spend :money::beer::D

The hardboard is under the vinyl, Gally, so I don't know if it feels wet, I just assumed it was mouldy because of the wall etc... and yes, it was laid before the repointing was done.

I don't, no ... and I don't know anything about them. I *will* investigate, but I'm working in less than an hour, and I feel **horrible**, sad to say - I had a glass of wine last night. Cue a really bad headache, and lots of throwing up :( I'm going to meet my commitments to my clients, and other than that, I'm going to sit in my armchair and watch comedies on DVD, cheer myself up.

Just watched Star Trek IV - the one with the whales. Anyone remember the punk on the bus who gets zapped by Spock? He was an associate producer! Turns out I'll even watch the credits of a film thats nearly 30 years old to distract myself from feeling sick :o

Hi CBC - thats a good point, about the moisture in the air. I'm careful with pan lids, and of course I dry almost everything outside nowadays, so thats better ... must have a look at dehumidifiers.

Any brand or model anyone would recommend?

  • Then, of course there are kettles (unless you have an outdoor solar one;)), showers and baths, steaming mugs of tea, even breathing which generate steam. When it's all added up, however good the house's ventilation, some must condense onto the coldest surfaces.

I wish there was a way to calculate how much vapour is given off from, say, a boiling kettle, just as there is to work out how much energy the kettle takes to boil. Maybe there is but physics was my worst and least-favourite subject at school:eek:.

KC - we have this one - yes it is pricey & my bank account has an alarm on it too!:D - but well worth every last cent - keeps our allergies at bay, and the house dry as well as doubling as a clothes dryer when it's too wet outside to hang the wash. We've cured the bathroom of the black mould that kept appearing on the ceiling near the vent!
