Isn't it just! It's something everyone deserves to be aware of. I've not done as well as you, but I have definitely saved myself a lot of money since I started using the site

Brilliant stuff pass the good word on to your friends.I have been as what my daughters call 'Frau frugal' for most of my life its almost second-nature to me but I still have picked up lots of tips and brilliant recipes from this site I only wish there was a button for 'Well done everyone' at the bottom of the posts as I would be hitting it almost daily

Well done. can you post a few of your meal ideas, I'm trying to cut back but still struggling.0 -
One of the most interesting stats regarding food is that on average one in every 3 bags worth of food sold in the supermarket ends up being thrown. So as a nation we should be able to cut food spending by a thirdish overall. Bt sadly food spending seems to be a growth area. Even allowing for people eating out less and eating in more the supermarkets are raking it in.
So I would say the start rules for anyone trying to save money on food are:-
1) Avoid waste as much as you possibly can, bottom of the fridge soups, fruit compotes, grated cheese/breadcrumbs frozen for another day, etc etc. Loads of great ideas on here and this is a fairly easy step for most people.
2)Cook more from scratch, the food on the whole is more nutricious, more filling and cheaper and most importantly tastier (plus you know exactly what ingredients are in there).
3) To combine the above 2 there needs to be some element of planning whether that be checking every couple of days to see if a leftover meal is due right up to planning for the week or even month. Home freezing can be a big help I find as if something can't be used up just when required it can be frozen.
4) Finally its about buying the best quality for the best price within your budget. Sites like my supermarket and others, plus the price sharing which goes on within forums like this can be invaluble. Plus an overall cinicysm regarding the big shops so called special offers. Just taking the extra second to think how does that offer translate into an individual pack price and how does that compare to normal price. The supermarkets rely on shoppers just wandering around throwing items almost randomly into the trolley, with headline "Offers" to try and draw you in to extra purchases you don't really need. A recent tatic they are using is reducing pack size whilst keeping prices the same effectively a price increase-v. sneaky.
Basically these are my summing up of all the wonderful ideas on this forum and I reckon most people no matter how much or how little time or cash they have can get use and savings from using these to a greater or lesser degree. I tell everyone I can about the OS boards they are brilliant!!!

I think that all of us on here have learnt so much from other mse'rs. I have always been pretty frugal, due to being pretty poor. Well poor anyway.
To have cut your shopping bill by that much is absolutely wonderful. I'm assuming that you aren't feeling that you're missing out on anything?
I've always much preferred home made to shop bought for everything.
I have though since coming on here started to freeze the dregs of things into old butter tubs etc. Then when there's enough I'll defrost them all & either make into a stew or whizz into a soup. Most months I get probably 3 or 4 extra meals that are FREE, as before I would have thrown a handful of this or that away. The only problem is when something is especially delicious you'll never be able to make it the same again.
It's surprising when you're on a budget just what a difference that extra couple of meals can make.
Maybe this site should be incorporated into the national curriculum.
I used to work with youngsters coming out of care, so most had no idea of financing & budgeting. I wish that I'd known about this then, as it would have been a great tool for them.0 -
