MS OS has been instrumental in totally changing the apple mint family lifestyle. If I need the answer to a question I always check with you all first, OH thinks you are all experts
What I think is great is that everyone is encouraged to contribute and we are all happy to chat away and help each other. It's a bit like an addition but with positive benefits
However the biggest influence you are all having is on the next generation living with OS'ers. My youngest daughter no longer automatically thinks of designer labels, is looking forward to the car boot season to pick up some bits and pieces for when she goes to university and has developed a healthier eating habit since she worked out how much it actually costs her each month to pop into the bakery every lunch time.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -

I agree with what you've all said. It's great to 'chat' with people who don't think I'm peculiar & aren't bored by talk of cooking, cleaning, sewing etc. Everyone always has something nice to say & whenever I need to know something I KNOW that I can find out here.
I think one of the main benefits of the site is that we're passing on old fashioned skills & knowledge that would otherwise die out. I think that's really important. :T0 -
This site has been great for me, I'm quite young and I suppose there's a lot of stuff that mum always just 'did' for me so when you move out and have your own kids it suddenly hits you how much there is to know about running a house - I always know I can come on here and get help from someone - most of the answers are already here it's just a case of reading through the old postsJoined slimming world Feb 2010

I have to admit to converting one member of my family to reading this site, my dear DiL and son recently adopteed a 3 year old and EVERYTHING had to be new and shiny. Well....... after a month the whinging started, do I know how much everything costs???
Well - Yes I do actually and you two are being a pair of silly pirrocks for buying new. so with the aid of some 4" gaffer tape and a stout chair I got them to read some of the threads on this site. I then asked them what they needed to get over the next two weeks for new daughter. I DID THE SHOPPING FOR THEM! Result two big bags of clothes, some for now, some to grow into and an ikea bag full of toys. Total cost was £8.50 of which the toys cost a total of £1!!
DiL will now admit to going into charity shops and they do go car booting, the next step is to convince them that expensive food isn't necessarily better food. At least they are trying to scratch cook a little. The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0 -
I agree with all the above. In the few months I have been on MSE I have visited OS¬ regularly and sometime posted. I must admit I have taken far more than I have given! Anyway, by following the hints and pointers and tips, I'm now £500 better off per year simply by making small changes here and there that do not alter my lifestyle in any way but save me money.
Now that's what I call useful.Thanks all!
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
I'd just like to say how much this site, and this thread in particular has helped me get through since I was made redundant at the end of last year. For months before I was made redundant I was fretting about getting another job and how I was going to manage, but now I am starting to see the value in staying at home to look after my own kids, cooking from scratch, shopping around for bargains, cleaning my own house instead of employing a cleaner. Although I am still stressed (DD1 is 15 and boy mad...) I am planning to try and stay at home and if I find another job it will be part-time. I am thinking of going to classes for sewing and am loving the home cooking thing! I read as many threads on OS each day as I can and I think you are all a really inspiring bunch!! Thanks!!Jane

Hi I Am Fairly New To Mse And Have Been Looking More And More At This Forum. The Thing That Strikes Me Is That Sometimes We Should Just Go Back A Little To How Things Were.
I Always Used To Think Nothing Of Spending £2.99 Upwards On A Ready Meal, Justifiying It With The Time Issue And Comparing How Much I Would Spend If I Went Out.
But I Have Printed Of So Many Ideas, Not Just Recipies, But Ways Of Organising Time With Regards To Meal Planning And Shopping Tips.
And It Really Is So Much Cheaper To Do As Much As Possible From Scratch :d
I Knew My O'level In Home Economics Would Come In Handy One Day!!Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.0
