I read, years ago, that none of the recommendations about how much salt we should limit ourselves to, booze daily maximum limits, five fruit and veg a day, or whether exercising truly leads of weightloss are actually based on any science at all. I decided that it didn't matter; I'm of the Ben Goldacre's Bad Science school of thinking on all of them - they're not doing me any harm, and they may do me some good.

I didn't give up the fags or booze because it was going to make me healthier; I did both because I knew one made both the house and me stink, cost me a fortune and I just didn't want to be dependent on it any more, and the other because of the effect it had on my behaviour.

Since stopping smoking, the confidence of being able to achieve just that was what led to a belief that I could change other destructive behaviours.

I may have said this before but some years ago b00t$ the chemist launched their new year sales drive with a project called something like 'Change one thing' and just by doing that, not trying to hit all of my self-destructive habits at the same time, I've finally managed to change and stop bad habits, and more importantly, stay stopped.

I walk around at least 8,000 steps every day and have done ever since I got the latest new to me rescue dog in April last year. My thigh muscles are definitely more defined but it hasn't helped with the weightloss one bit; the only thing that does that is stopping eating cheese and chocolate, my go to foods when I'm peckish. Or lunch. Or I'm out. Or I need a treat. Or it's a mealtime.

I'm no fitter than I was, either - I still get puffed and tired really quickly, but hey, the thighs are shaping up, which isn't bad for an old bird that's going to hit the 60-mark in a few months.

    5/31 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.

Honey Bear, I suppose what I find is that it's easier to keep accountable if I put a number on things. If my goal this year was just "drink less", nothing would probably happen, but if I say "no drinking for 200 days", I can keep track of whether I am doing that, so I will probably achieve it. Same with sugar and fat - the official guidelines quite probably are arbitrary, but at least I will actually do something about it if I set myself a target. In fact that seems to be the whole raison d'etre of this thread and is something everyone else here is no doubt familiar with, so I will stop going on about it! :)

Piggles, I don't know what to say to make it easier or better, but if I could give you a bit squishy hug, I would. In the meantime, here's a virtual one. (((Hugs))) I hope it helps. I do want to point out, though, that every single day you go without a drink, or put the bottle back on the side instead of finishing it is a huge, huge victory - and you've had several of those over the past month, so you're doing amazing things. Hugely well done.

    Thanks Honey Bear :)

Well, I've finished the horrible housing stuff, sent all that off. And the weird extra form that was unrelated, I sent that off today.

There are a lot of surveyors and high-vis wearing people about today and a lot of the houses in this close are now empty so it's making me nervous. I've no idea still where I'm going.

I spoke to the people who I was referred to for MH and they were really helpful. Their services will probably reopen, but I don't live near them so it doesn't help at the moment. But they have telephone support starting soon so I'll use that. They really know their stuff for what I've got so that's good :)

The MS is at bay, and not bothering me too much apart from balance. Wherever I go I'll see about all the appointments for that and what to do.

I had one more AFD, but yesterday was so 'orrible I drank in the evening, but realised as soon as I woke this morning it didn't do any good. But hey, forgive myself yesterday because it was an unusual and fretful day, and it was less units than some other times as well.

And at least I've learnt now, having had AFDs, that a) I can do it, and b) how much better it makes me feel. So I'll press on and try again. I bought more cranberry juice :) I really like the feeling when I wake that I had nothing the night before.

    2/18 AFD please shaggy :)

What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

So day's off have begun and trying to keep busy. Think my OH is shocked as I am doing stuff around the house that she has been on about for ages ;)

Going for a walk shortly and see how I go. Feeling OK at the moment to be honest but wont declare yet but 99% sure I will be AF.

Might get washed away yet with the amount of rain we have had today

Hope everyone has a great evening

Calling in early tonight as my back is really aching and I feel quite poorly. Not sure if I may have a kidney infection looming :(
