I don't have a problem with government guidelines in principle either but I do think they need to be put in context. If government chose to they could introduce a sugar tax or give clearer guidelines to prevent obesity but they choose not to although they're very happy to take huge revenues on booze and fags. Where's the logic in that?

It does seem a bit nuts that the government is wasting money obsessing about whether men have 3 units or 4 units per day when obesity is now such a big problem in this country - talk about fiddling while Rome burns. Obesity is a bigger problem than alcohol. 10% of the NHS budget is going on managing type 2 diabetes and this can only get worse. £12 billion to be spent on gastric band operations alone. Obesity is costing the NHS just under £50 billion per year. And let's be honest it has the potential to destroy the NHS.

What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

There will always be exceptions to any norm, for example my 24-year-old niece was hospitalised with inflamed liver/pancreas last year and the consultant was convinced she had been binge drinking. She hadn't had a drink for over 4 years, due to having 3 babies under 4. She does have a very fatty diet, which was the biggest contributory factor, but didn't get much dietary advice.

It's nuts but if you drink any amount of alcohol (even a small amount) and get any problems with your liver it's put down to alcohol - yet a bad diet can give you liver disease (watch Morgan Spurlock's "Supersize Me" to witness what a bad diet does to the liver in a very short period of time). So liver disease due to alcohol is probably over recorded and liver disease caused my diet under reported.

Goodness Shaggy, you do talk a lot of well-informed sense! I think I have a particularly skewed version of the state of our collective national health (as opposed to the NHS) because I live on the Hoe close to the Barbican in Plymouth. Over bank holiday weekends the atmosphere is now so toxic on the Barbican I don't know anyone who will even walk down the street in the daytime any more, much less the evening - and that's all down to the booze. Horrible. And yes, walking around town, I'm afraid to say I have noticed that whereas you'd see the odd obese person 20 years ago, now it's pretty much half of the people. It's just so, so sad.

    Welcome back, Smiley!

Well done on the ginger tea, New Me and Welcome! As Shaggy says, a new Monday is all you need to turn over a new leaf.

Piggles, I don't know what to say to make it easier or better, but if I could give you a bit squishy hug, I would. In the meantime, here's a virtual one. (((Hugs))) I hope it helps. I do want to point out, though, that every single day you go without a drink, or put the bottle back on the side instead of finishing it is a huge, huge victory - and you've had several of those over the past month, so you're doing amazing things. Hugely well done.

    4/31 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.

Determined to get back on the wagon and have an AF day today. I've been sensible over Christmas but need to get back into good habits. I think Dave will be proud of me as I think part of the revised advice is to abstain for a few days each week;).

    1 AFD please Shaggy.

Interesting that article on life expectancy. We know that lots of exercise and a sensible diet which is high in veg and fruit contributes to longevity. Looking at people now, how many can really say that they have at least 5 F&V a day every day and eat less than 6 teaspoons of sugar daily and do at least 30 minutes of exercise that makes you short of breath three times a week? These are the minimum recommendations and I would bet that the majority of the UK population miss them.

If we just look at the early lifestyle of the people who are now in their 80s and 90s we can see how healthily they ate (even in times of scarcity) and how active they were. I reckon that, even with medical advances, increases in Longevity are going to slow and even stop.

    That's cheerful, sorry!

I'm feeling the bells for the first time tonight since before NYE. Not sure why, but I am going to do my best to resist even if I have to go to bed early...
    Trying to keep in budget.
