Hope you have a great celebration Saturday in your daughters memory. Sounds indeed as if there is going to be a massive test of your resolve.
Whilst me not drinking is hard enough, managing peoples expectations of my drinking - or not drinking - is equally problematic. I have had to come up with all sorts of reasons over last 7 months to not start drinking in social situations.
You can make non alcoholic cocktails which makes you look like you may be drinking and so avoids the questions, then expected explanation which people who are drinking get unnerved by. Sometimes when I get asked if I'm not drinking I say "Yes Rupert & I are trying for a baby and we're worried about our eggs" (both male and 40). People get embarrassed or laugh but generally drop it. Or I say I'm having one later. As people get tipsy, louder and more self centred they soon forget whether I'm drinking or not. Non alcoholic beers poured into a glass helps and creates illusion of "joining in".
Failing that, I put off drinking for as long as possible so any potential damage is minimised. The other excuse I use is I say I have a dental infection and am on an antibiotic called Metronidazole which causes severe vomiting if mixed with alcohol. It generally is the easiest reason.
    Rupert is a pseudonym.

Unfortunately, wedding at weekend is already causing me stress and anxiety. In recent months Ive drank less & less often & used the antibiotic excuse endless times. All my in laws will be there (I've married VERY well) and although we are very much seen as the "good time boys", these days I go from 0 to 60 in 8 seconds when I drink. I actually have an antibiotic to take to stop me drinking as it will make me vomit but managing the questions without self titling myself as an alcoholic will be hard.

Anyway, poorly Mac is back so I am happy. Haven't drank tonight but already posted this morning. Major pull to drink Prosecco this beautiful evening was side stepped courtesy of more Cheese & biscuits.

Tanks manpants for the support, don't really have the problem you have with people trying to get me to drink, I just crave a drink and as you say a nice prosecco this evening would have been lovely sitting in the garden. Good luck with the wedding this weekend I'msure you'll think of something to keep you on the straight and narrow

Thanks Manpants for your words of support, I don't really have the problem of people pushing drink on me just me liking it and finding reasons why I should have a drink. Good luck at the wedding this weekend hopefully you'll come up with something to keep you on the straight and narrow.

    DAY 4 for me hurrah!

    Morning All,

Navigated successfully through pre - dinner drinks in a pub followed by dinner out in a Steak restaurant last night. That is not to say it was even remotely easy. In both venues I easily could have crumbled and could even feel the words formulating in my mouth to come out and order a drink. Cider, lager, real ale, wine, gins, cocktails, shots whatever. Pernod is the only drink I don't like. Sadly.

Such is my anxiety about drinking at the wedding tomorrow, I actually dreamt I was drinking a glass of white wine at the wedding last night. I woke up with a start, thinking I actually had and was full of anxiety & remorse. I am praying there will be some non alcoholic beers there.

Gym & subbed for me today.

    Gotta be quick, but
    +1 please shaggy.

MP you do make me laugh with your posts despite the seriousness of what you are saying, you put it so humourously and I can relate and appreciate what you are saying. I think you are very inspiring along with many others here. I certainly feel more accountable to myself along with you lot.

Maman, hope you feel better soon and the AFness continues.

    Honey, hope you are ok.

Dizzy, I know how you feel I read every day but rarely have to post anything significant, but by coming here it still helps to read what others write.

Keep at it guys, have a great weekend.

Hope you do enjoy the wedding MP.

Day 3 for me, even my daughter was surprised after today, rather stressful to say the least. Saturday will be a test though, having a BBQ for my late daughters birthday we do every year and I get terribly tiddled and then go on a downer but this year I'm really determined not to drink and remember her beautiful face. I don't want to say that I'll never drink again but can't seem to have one glass as people suggest have to drink the bottle so waiting for the good things to come out of non-drinking, find I really get bored, have started looking at peoples blogs. Sorry didn't mean to write so much. GOOD LUCK WALES XXX

Thank you for your welcome people xxx

I was so sorry to hear you'd lost your daughter, and totally sympathise with wanting to get blitzed on the day of her birthday. I hope you find the strength to stay sober and celebrate her life with people who loved her. Good luck with it, and I'll be thinking of you on Saturday.

Glad the Mac's back up and running. Please, please don't take an anti-biotic just to stop you drinking. I'm pretty certain there are other drugs available through your GP that would have exactly the same effect without needing to compromise the future effectiveness of antibiotics.

Good luck with the wedding tomorrow; I'll be thinking of you and wishing you *strenthening vibes* all day.

And *healing vibes* for you, too, Maman.

Hang on in there, ShySpender and Dizzy. Lovely to know you're both keeping going.

    8/31 please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.
