Old Style things you can't or won't do.

Options
Generally speaking, we are all on this part of the forum as we embrace old style money saving & old style stuff.

But I was thinking of OS things I don't do.

I don't make soup. I can't stand soup. Yuk. I've tried. I've made soup. But no matter how I try. It makes me feel ill to eat it.

I don't use reusable cloths to clean the loos. I use disposable wipes.

No matter how I try, I am unable to knit or crochet. I hate sewing & only sew on buttons under duress.

What about the rest of you?

    Regarding your things:
    1. I like certain soups only and won't just make anything into soup- it's mainly lentil and carrot for me!
    2. I sometimes use reusable cloths but have been known to use wipes in the past.
    3. I love to knit, have done for years, and learned to crochet a while back. Very relaxing. I am not so keen on sewing though, don't mind hand sewing but really not keen on machines!
    Each to their own!
The one thing that sticks in my mind that I cannot do is eat meat other than breast meat from a chicken, or boil the carcus up for stock.....bleurgh! I have tried the brown meat, and DH likes it, but it's too slimy for me. Also won't use value beef mince, has to be decent steak mince, though normally reduced stuff if I can get it!
I don't think anyone does EVERYTHING OS, it's doing what works for you surely? :)

I don't make stock from bones. In the bin they go.

I don't use washable cloths very often, I use wipes or kitchen roll.

I don't bake my own bread or make cakes.

    I don't use a slow cooker.

I don't go in charity shops.

I'm a bit of a fraud posting on this board really.

    Quite right.:o

I know there are some who save virtually every last vegetable peeling to make soup; I simply don't have sufficient freezer space for this to be practical, so peelings go on the compost.

I also totally draw the line at "wee wipes" for the loo. I don't have a big problem with the idea. but with only two of us in the house, and DH is at work all day, so only me here full time, it's the storing of them til there's enough for a machine-full. *shudders*

The loo gets cleaned with a bit of loo paper with cleaning stuff on, I don't buy special wipes.

I do make soup, I have a breadmaker, but I buy YS bread and rolls as well. I cant knit or sew, I do buy from charity shops and pound shops as well, I recycle as much as I can. I use astonish cleaning products, cheap and BUAV approved. I use as many leftovers as I possibly can when cooking.

Im sure there are many people who are way more thrifty/old style than me but I do my best.
  • I tried to make stock from a chicken carcass and veg a couple of times but the time and effort and cleaning afterwards had me running back to oxo cubea

I could eat more frugal food, if I was on my own it would be easy but OH is a fussy beggar with things he won't eat (not a huge fan of mince ie bolognaise for example) this is also why we don't have a SC, I don't think it would be worth it

He also likes a variety during the week, ie I'd quite happily eat ham butties or the same soup everyday for lunch but he gets bored easily.

I go through stacks of kitchen roll and use it for all sorts of things, then again i do get the Nicky brand from home bargains...

I can't knit or sew to save my life - tried sewing a button back on some trousers last year - it fell off after a week

On holiday I can't do all inclusive, might work out cheaper if you take advantage but I like to go out am actually experience the apartment, not for it to be like a week in Blackpool but with more sun... by the same token I can't be going self catering and be eating noodles every meal to save money, yawn.

Oh and my house is full of clutter, and I have found the inclination to sort it out as yet :o
  • - No slow cooker or bread maker
    - No reusable kitchen roll or wee clothes (though this isn't a hard limit,I'm just not organised at the mo)

I do use cloth nappies for ds and moon cup & reusable pads for me which usually freaks people out.

    Mooncup made me sore.

I loathe and despise the microwave. If hubby ate his meal with me and our son it would be redundant. To me its a waste of worktop.

Wee cloth? I don't think so!

However, the only convenience food I do buy are frozen pizzas and frozen chips. Apart from those. Pretty much all food I do cook, is cooked from scratch. As for eating out.... well we don't.
