I do buy 90% of my meat ys or the local butcher. mooncups no no no ladies would rather eat my own feet than go down that road lifes hard enough! oh and son take pack lunches.all food cooked from scratch I enjoy it! I tend to hoard bargains..............approx. 25 toothpaste and most toiletries similar amounts maybe more. I sell on flea bay/markets/bootsales. love charity shops , I could go on. but I do still like luxuries !who doesn't! but I will NOT put myself in debt to get the things I want. tweak here and there and I can usually save and get it.the yacht in capri...............lots of tweaking still to be done xxx

  • I can honestly say I don't find the mooncup any hassle at all. I always worried with tampons that I'd use the wrong absorbancy and get tss. And pads just go in with the nappies, job done. I hate the plasticky nastiness of disposable pads.

We do quite a number of old style things and it's hard to remember them all!! Here goes:
    * we waste very little food and cook from scratch 98% of the time.
    * Always make soup.. bought soup is so expensive and tastes inferior imo
    * when cooking pasta or spuds we use boiling water from the kettle boil the pan for five minutes then switch off
    * we charge everything on E7 at night
    * washing machine goes on E7 at night too
    * we use very little washing detergent but I boost it with 'oxigen' which costs £1 and lasts about 6 months and costs £1
    * we make Jam, chutney, pickles cakes and bread
    * mendthings where possible
    * reuse and recycle when we can
    * switch out lights, power of etc
    * bulk out meals where we can for instance grating carrots into vege mince

    Things we will not do
    * buy cheap washing up liquid.. tried it and its false economy. Instead buy fairy when on offer
    * some things like ketchup, tea and fizzy drinks we won't compromise on but only buy when on offer and stock up
    * forgo using kitchen roll. We buy bounty but refuse to pay more than 50p a roll. It lasts ages. We keep scissors by the roll and chop off what we need
    * wash at less than 40 degrees... this is the minimum temperature for killing germs.
    * make soup out of outer leaves or peelings. I remove outer leaves or peel veg such as carrots because of pesticides
    * have anything other than decent quality toilet roll definately no wee cloths..:shocked:_pale_Utterly disgusting imo. Again we buy velvet think it was £4.50 for 18 rolls months ago sand stool lots left.
    * never, ever, ever, ever contemplate using a moon cup:shocked: again I wait for the items I need to be on offer. costs about £1 pet month.. Well worth it imo :)

Oh and we buy Aldis Italian proper coffee as we can't stand instant but it lasts ages.

Each to their own though everyone has ways of doing things that work for them.. watching with interest to see if there is anything else I can pick up!

Will post some more when I think of them.

Have never been able to understand the fascination with making your own soup. Can't see the point when there's so many good options in the supermarkets.

..........t. I always try to buy free range/outdoor bred due to my own beliefs regarding animal welfare.)

Your first point is connect ed to the other one I've quoted for me. Premade food is ( as well as not being honed to personal tastes) often made with lower standards of animal products or ingrediants farmed in other unethical ways ( e.g. Palm oil)

I think its pretty hard to avoid unethically produced animal products tbh. We don't manange it entirely and I put more effort in than the average meat eater (and frankly more than very many vegetarians). There are some things I'd find harder to give up. occasionally I like to but stuff like prociutto or a salami, the origins of which are harder to ensure. But its pretty easy to make my own soup.

Stock making IS hob heavy, but I'm not aware of a free range source meat stock? As someone with no heating and who does taste the benefit of home cooked food its something I'm willing to do though. :D. We always have marigold veg stock for lazy days in though. :).

I love home made soup and it's so easy to do. Potato & leek, as an example: peel potatoes and chop. Chop an onion and slice a leek. Put all in a pan of stock (chicken or veg). Boil til the potatoes break up. Use a blender to make smooth or a potato masher if no blender available. Season to taste. No fat, not gluten, no dairy - lots of taste :)
When making soup yourself, you know what's in it and no nasty additives, excess salt/sugar/fat that isn't necessary.

I don't make my own stock, I've tried a couple of times, but it's just not worth it for me.

Eta: what I do though, is like tonight. I wanted boiled potatoes for my dinner and thought I'd probably like the same tomorrow so I boiled enough for two portions. The ones for tomorrow only need heating through, so saves on fuel :)

When I tried to make home made stock from chicken bones etc, I really gave up!

Simmering the stuff in a pot for ages uses up do much energy cost, and the steam in the kitchen gave me the vapours!

Then when it's cooled down you have to skim off the fat deposits, yeeeeugh. What do I do with that! And don't try to tell me I can fry something off with it....NO! So how do I dispose of it? Won't tell you what I did!

So a stock cube like Marigold is a MSE way of getting stock, or indeed an oxo cube. The veg one is really good IMO, loadsa salt I know, but we would all be dead if we analysed everything we put in our gobs!

Sometimes, non homemade Is just so convenient, and better use of resources...

funnily enough I prefer home made Pea soup to tinned Pea and Ham soup (which contains so little ham its laughable). my favourite soup is red pepper (which could contain peppers of other colours - but tastes just as good). or leek and potato - another hearty soup. and Onion soup! delish! strange isn't it but I love veg soups - yet am a carnivore!

Now that's someone after me own heart! Easy soups are delish and quick. And as you say, you know whats in em!

Stock making at home is ridiculous when you think about the amount of energy used to produce the stuff. Let someone else do that, and enjoy the result.

I refuse to compromise on coffee, fairy liquid, decent tonic for my gin, and detest thin horrid loo rolls! Would rather have a small portion of decent meat than a pile of chewy gristly yuckiness!
I do buy the things I like to use when on offer, and will shop anywhere that sells what I want to buy. Am limited to washing powder and softener due to the kids and my allergy and skin problems. If I can buy it in a cheaper shop for half the money that's fine, as I enjoy my holidays and having a decent car, do a lot of miles to get to work and need a reliable and comfortable vehicle as public transport can't get me there, mind you I changed cars early last time, moving up 2 models but with a great deal so saved £140 a month in payments which just about covers my diesel bill to commute!

Meaty soups in my experience can go stringy, particularly chicken. Too long on the hob I suppose.

Veg, on the other hand can cope!

I also find that if you leave the soup for a day or so in the fridge, it tastes SO much better. Same goes for stews and the like. The flavours have time to absorb or something.

I'm getting hungry now sod it!
