Its the cumulative effect though isnt it?

    2% isnt much. But 2% in 2008 plus 2% in 2009 plus 2% in 2010 plus 2% in 2011 plus 2% in 2012 plus 2% in 2013 might have been worthwhile

so, no pay rise since 2008?

Again, a payrise is usually supposed to maintain your standard of living in line with inflation, not improve it.

I'm a bit confused here OP, what advice are you actually looking for here? Or do you just want people to agree with you?

Inflation may not be in double figures as it has been at some points in the past but any salary that increases at less than the rate of inflation is still shrinking in real terms. Employers owe it to their employees to make annual increases at least the rate of RPI inflation. After all nobody works 5% less year on year do they?
That does assume the employer can pass the increased costs onto their customers. This is not the case in many industries. Competition is fierce in many sectors.

I havent asked what others are paid

Well I never said that you had but your postings suggest you are concerned where you sit in the pecking order. You said:

Without knowing how my wages compare to others, then I dont know if I will get a pay rise when there is a pay rise.

So ive asked hr if I would qualify for a pay rise

How could they answer yes or no to the last question without indicating where you sit in the pecking order.

How many people do you know that are irreplacible though?

    That was my point!

But you can still ask for a pay rise, if they listen explain why you think you are worth a rise and if they say p!ss off you can surmise that your bargaining position is weak. That is what negotiation is all about.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

No my workload has not decreased in the last year. If anything it has slightly increased

Exactly. So why should your pay shrink?

Is there a union already active in your workplace?

If so, join tomorrow and get involved.

If not, why not put yourself forward as shop steward and start organising your colleagues so that you have more bargaining power?

Yes and no. The proportion of their income distributed as wages is a choice and can be increased or decreased, as can other variables like capital investment, advertising spend, executive remuneration, dividend payouts etc. so in many cases companies can keep wages at the same real level without passing on the full nominal cost to customers.
