    I am old enough to remember when the miners and other forced up inflation in the UK. Most ended up with no jobs at all.

    OP should be in a position to make a judgement on that for himself. One easy way to make a rough stab at it is to look out the window at the executive car park. How old are the motors? How many of the directors have chauffeurs? etc.

    Re the miners.... Don't start that old argument, or this thread will run and run!

    Well I've been a union member for a number of years and a steward for about a year. I haven't received any death threats to date.

    If you're not willing to stand up for yourself this thread is pointless. You'll only get a rise if you negotiate one. They don't grow on trees and it's in the employers interests for the price of your labour to decrease year on year so you do need to ask!

    You can either negotiate individually or together with your colleagues, as a previous poster pointed out.

    but then if it were that simple - no one would be in a low paid job and no one would ever go without an inflationary pay rise

    You need to be realistic though and looking at the bosses cars isn't the way, that just smacks of the green eye monster.

    If you think you can do a better job as an employer...why not create your own business, risk your own house etc?

    But can the system support everyone successfully creating their own business?

    Isn't that the lie of capitalism - ie that everyone can suceed - when in reality only a small amount can

    And are all of those that succeed in business really the best - or just the luckiest?

    Isn't encouraging people to start their own business just encouraging them to take a gamble

    obviously when people gamble - some will be very successful - but wont most fail through no real fault of their own?

    Such a poor arguement, they owe to pay above NMW as a minimum, if employees want more then they should move.

    A contract is for a certain wage, not a certain wage +inflation (generally)

    but if someone does a job in 2010 and they can pay their mortgage and they do the same job in 2014 and cant pay their mortgage - arent they in effect being paid less?

    what is the difference between a pay freeze and rising costs - and prices remaining fixed and a wage cut?
