Jerking Car

I've got an old Ford Sierra with a problem lol. It has been working perfectly until now. Starts up ok, but when you start to pull away it begins to jerk and kangaroo. It has backfired a couple of times. Changed the plugs and LT leads. Still having problems, any ideas guys? Many thanks

Did you try changing HT leads (High Tension Leads)
Check the distributor cap for any signs of cracking.

Those old beasts used to suffer with issues caused by the autochoke on the carburettor. They used to get stuck open and cause over fueling.....

True, when I had one I converted it with a manual choke kit, though I doubt you can get one nowadays.

Might be possible to do what I do on the Westfield, remove the choke completely, ignition on, pump 4-5 times (pumping the throttle opens up the accelerator pump and squirts fuel straight into the cylinders), start the car and "blip the throttle" (again pumping fuel into it) until it starts to settle down.
It can be a tricky technique, too much fuel and it floods, not enough and it won't start.

I don't know if that'll work on the standard carbs, but I don't see why not.

    Have you asked on https://www.fordsierraclub.co.uk?

There's nothing those guys don't know.

Nice to see another Sierra owner anyway! :)
  • Has it driven through any particularly wet conditions recently? My car kangarooed when I drove through a deep puddle by accident and got water in it.

Have you run it near empty?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
