And you accepted. They're not going to ask again after that no matter how much you use.

However, they could have been truthful and told me that in fact the outstanding bill was over £6000 at that point, not the £34 I was asked to pay.

I agree with both the above points. However, something is not right since Orange have credited over £27K to my account without a hint of a fight from me.
That's because they are foregoing some of their excessive profit. When you consider that they charge a reasonable £10/GB in the UK but an unreasonable £8,000/GB outside the EEA, you can see that they have a lot of leeway to waive charges.

It's not them who make the charges, in Canada it's AT&T who pass the charges onto Orange. This is another thing that rattles my chains - neither company accept responsibility/accountability/liability. They each tell the customer to ask the 'other' network. Have tried and I know.

No, you're wrong here on your first point. Orange sets its price at £8,000/GB for roaming on all networks in all non-EEA countries. The wholesale rate for data that Orange is charged varies for each visited network but is a tiny fraction of this, probably similar to what Orange charges within the UK (e.g. £10/GB). This is evident from the fact that Vodafone UK charges £5 for 25MB outside the EEA, which works out at £200/GB.
  • mmmm - good to know. Thanks.

It is 'Three' who have abolished roaming charges in various countries?

Just shows, you are correct. A mega mark up incurred. Slimeballs.

Orange's "Travel Data Saver £15 Daily" bundle is another indicator of the huge markup.
Orange shamelessly admit that you can make "94% saving on standard rate" with this bundle, i.e. their markup is at least 94/6=~1600%.
In fact it's much bigger as they make profit from selling the bundle too.
  • Agreed. the Travel Saver Daily £15 Bundle' is a huge markup - and another reason is because they opt you out of the data roaming limit without your knowledge.

The only one that needs to take responsibility is the one using the device.

Three haven't "abolished" roaming charges. There are certain things you can do when roaming that they no longer charge for. For example in the USA you can use your data without being charged extra. You can also use your minutes and texts but only specifically to UK numbers. If you phone or text a number registered in the USA you'll still pay roaming rates.

Don't know if you've heard of this website..... - it's OK and legit, so I'm reliably informed, so check it out about Three and their roaming charges.

Hooloovoo rightly pointed out that the term "abolished" that you used was incorrect.

...remember, if you send texts or make calls to local numbers while abroad you’ll be charged our normal roaming rates. And if you’re using Pay As You Go credit or you use all of your inclusive allowances, we’ve arranged special roaming rates for you that are lower than normal in these destinations.
And it would be more correct to say "some countries" rather than "various counties".

BTW, Canada isn't one of the "various counties" and data there cost £6/Mb - marginally less than Orange's £8.
