  • I will indeed do that. But I still expect a refund for the charges for caller display which i did not ask for and do not want. I also had NO notification whatsoever of a prince increase. The first I knew of it was on seeing my bill (after finally being able to log in to their site).

If you already had Caller Display then you would be charged for that from 4th January unless you told them to cancel it beforehand or agreed to stay with them for another year. You can cancel it now but I'd be very surprised if they refund you.

If you operate your account online you will have been notified that way. Why were you not able to log in before?

The price increases were also also widely discussed on here. Did you not see any?

Caller Display charge and the line rental increase from Jan '14 have been widely publicised since last Autumn. If you were on online billing then why didn't you sort out the log in issue earlier so that you could check?

You need to check your bills every month because when charges go up BT won t tell you , you are expected to contact them and query anything and hopefully negociate a better deal. This will then lead to the beginning of another contract. I know it happened to me but it won t anymore as I will be more thorough now.

Hi all, I have just checked my BT past bills online (I was previously unable to log in prior to last month as they gave me incorrect log in details), and seen that my bill has gone up and they've been charging me for months!

    Calling Plan Unlimited Weekend Plan
    Broadband Unlimited Broadband

Total rental and other charges = £ 36.60

In April 2013 I signed up for these prices (confirmation email details)

    Your monthly charges

    Line Rental £15.45

    Broadband and Calls £16.00
Yet to discover BT Vision? See bt.com/vision for a great TV service

    Special offer discount £-16.00
Your special offer discount lasts for 6 months

Your monthly total £15.45 (£31.45 after the 6 months free period)

So they have been charging me £15.99 line rental, £17.03 (including a £2 processing fee) broadband, and £1.75 caller display.

That's an extra £3.32 per month. I haven't agreed to this, and I want it stopped and the money refunded. How do I do this?

I should point out that I signed up to pay via direct debit and receive my bills online. I have never received any notification of price increases or these extra charges (just checked my emails & nothing except the initial confirmations). In fact when I took out the contract I told them in no uncertain terms I do NOT want any extra services as I will be using broadband only.

You can get it stopped but you won t get it refunded. Not the same thing but when I had trouble with my phone not working properly for about two months this is what happened to me

.Every time I checked the Bt online fault checker it came up with the fault was within my home. Now because I did n t want to pay the £129 they charge for an engineer to call which I think is ridiculous. I paid for someone to come and have a look incidentally an ex bt engineer who said the fault was outside the house.

I paid him £35 for this diagnosis and wished the fault was in the house then he could have fixed it. I contacted BT and an engineer was booked for a weeks time. The fault was at the exchange a few miles away. Because bt lied to me for want of a better word I payed £35 which I need not have done.

I phone up and speak to a guy in India again saying I would like £35 back one way or another as I know the don t " do " compensation as such but I was refused. The best I managed to get was £10 so hopefully will see that on my next bill.
  • I didn't have any notification because I could not log in. They gave me incorrect log in details and it's only just been sorted. Although when I checked online there was nothing there either, I don't have a BT email and had to hunt to see the information about price increases (only looking because I found out about it when I saw my bill!). From reading around it seems it's not just me that has been hoodwinked in this way. Looks like they deliberately kept it on the low down so that no one would try to cancel their contract when they saw the increase, which apparently you can do within 10 days of notification.

I'm probably fighting a losing battle with this, but there is no harm asking. Not that it looks like BT are bothered as they have not contacted me or responded to my emails.

Apologies for digging up this 3 month old thread, but it kind of explains things perfectly ... which is more than can be said for BT when you call them

    Here is my experience.

Been with BT for years. Originally signed up for privacy service a long, long time ago really beacuse of the free caller display service (as I was already registered with the TPS anyway)

Anyway, last quarter of last year (maybe August) I remember there was a warning here on MSE that BT were changing their pricing. Caller Display would now be charged even if you have BT privacy.

BUT there was a way out, and that involved agreeing to remain with BT for a further 12 months.

So I pre-registered in readiness for BT's change effective 04 January 2014. I've still got the screendump proving I pre-registered. Good job really as I then forgot all about it until the first quarterly bill this year arrived in March ... and yes there was the charge, backdated to 04 Jan and 3 months in advance too ... so 5 and a bit months.

I call BT and they start reading from a script that Caller Display became chargable from 04 January 2014, blah, blah, blah. No mention of how to get it for free ... until I pushed them to admit it was free if I agreed to a 12 month contract, and I had alreday previously done that.

So eventually get a refund. Not one refund, but 6 refunds ... one for each month or part thereof I had been charged.

Oh well, anyone can make mistakes so I forgot all about it.

Recently got my second quarterly bill. And there it is again, 3 months worth of charges for Caller Display.

So I called them. Once again they go into their scripted notes. Caller Display became chargable from 04 January 2014, blah, blah, blah. Again, no mention of how to get it for free.
So I tell them this occured last quarter and I got a refund, so I want a refund this quarter too and an assurance no further chages will occur in future quarters.

Was promised a refund, and was categorically assured I won't be charged again for Caller Display.

Great I thought. Get a handful of emails come flooding in; 3 for each 3 months charges being refunded 2 relating to how I have now agreed to remain with BT for a further 12 months; I never agreed to that!

So I called up again, explained the situation and got the same scripted message. Caller Display became chargable from 04 January 2014, blah, blah, blah. And once again, absolutely no mention of how to get it for free.
I said I've already been through this and already have the refund.

So what was the issue he enquired? I said I did not agree to remain with BT for a further 12 months starting now; I agreed that ages ago.

Eventually after lots of arguing, and him speaking with his manager, he said ok we will relieve you from the 12month contract with BT and provide you with Caller Display on a month by month basis free of charge. No idea how he was going to do that, but I agreed.

This morning I found out how he relieved me from the new 12 month contract - he'd cancelled the new order for Caller Display altogether that the first person had signed me up for without permission. So I had no Caller Display!

Another call today has Caller Display back on now. No idea if they intend to charge me or what I am supposed to have agreed to. A formal letter of complaint is already in the post.

MSE'ers - don't listen to BT. You can get Caller Display for FREE for 12 months (renewable). You need to sign up to their privacy service (which registers your number with the TPS) and commit to 12 months being with BT.
... and then complain every time they then try and charge you or attempt to commit you to a further 12 months contract.
