I see theres a thread going on 400 + entries about this,so thought I'd risk a new one:o

I'm confused,I thought BT Basic users were gonna be lumbered with the new £1.75 a month charge if they wanted to keep their Caller ID thingy working. The bumbf from BT seemed to suggest as such.....................However,have just read on the Daily Mail website,a story that is now 2-3 days old, that is not so,and I quote...............

"We will continue to offer BT Privacy with Caller Display free of charge to customers on BT Basic customers, our calling plan for low income customers.'"
I suppose I could call them to find out,but not sure I have the will to live that long...............

In case anyone wants it,heres a link to full DM page..............

    Just to confirm the above.

I told my father about this last night.
He has BT Basic and cancelled caller display and 1571, when the charges were announced.

He telephoned them this morning (UK BT Basic call centre) and was put on hold for a few minutes while she checked.
She then confirmed that caller display is 'free for 12 months' with BT Basic and switched it back on.

She did admit though that she didn't know it was free, so you may have to get them to check.

1571 is still chargeable (but just get an old answerphone of ebay)

There is no charge for cancelling 1571.

Just make sure you call BT Basic in the UK,not the India general customer services.

They will ask you if you want it switched off immediately or on the day before usually.

I currently have BT privacy for free. I know they are planning to charge £1.75 for the service as of 4th January and I currently have this box checked on my account, however, my BT privacy is not working today. Has this happened to anyone else?
Surely it should be free right up until 31st December as my bill isn't normally due until 2nd Jan and the charge should then be applied then?
I do see that I can sign up for another 12 months free of charge BUT it also signs me up for another 12 months contract - something I don't want to do as I only have a few months left then I will be shopping around for a better deal.
I know I will probably need to query this with them but it would be interesting to know if anyone else's privacy is not working and see if it's a ploy from BT to get customers to phone and then sign up to get it 'free' as well as signing up for a further 12 months?

No your contract is unchanged - it is a minimum term that is added.

The reason why it is free, is because there is value to your commitment. If you do not wish to accept this, then you pay the rack rate shown on the price list.

The date of cessation will be the anniversary of provision - which rarely matches the billing date. So if it's off now, it simply timed out as you declined to renew or pay.

I didn't decline to pay that's the point. I have checked the box that says from 4th Jan the charge will be £1.75.

I asked BT to cancel 1571 service. Since they did that I can't receive calls! Callers hear "Sorry, you can't leave a message at the moment"

Fault reporting call centre is useless. They said "Line tests OK, we'll have to send an engineer" They've not even managed to put on a temporary diversion.

Sounds like a random technical fault. Our BT line is still correctly presenting Calling Line Identity (except, as usual, for calls from overseas) today. And that is after I have sent a Letter Before Action to BT warning them that I do not accept that they have any right to unilaterally change the terms of my contract and start charging for CLIP, will pay only Under Protest, will demand a refund at the end of my contract, and will issue a money claim in the County Court if I do not receive this refund.
My bill dated 12 December did not include any advance charge for CLIP (though it did, as usual, include the advance charge for our 'Anytime Plan' from 12 December to 11 January). I assume that the bill dated 12 January 2014 will include the (extra-contractual, in my view) charge for CLIP from 4 January to 11 February.
