  • Hello all,

Saff hope A had a great first birthday! !

Regarding playgroups, we go to baby signing, only in he last month has he taken an interest but to be honest I've kept going just for me, it's been something to look forward to each week and because we do songs and are constantly learning, I don't have to participate in small talk which I hate. Saying that though I haven't any friends with babies and haven't made any new ones. But I'm ok with that.

Quick question, lo has started to push boundaries and I'm struggling to find one way to make him understand that we are not allowed to do it, what works for a 13 month old that isn't really harsh but gets the message across? I currently sit him down away from toys and tell him not to do the certain thing but he does it again within half hour!

    Thanks
Newly Married, not a 2b anymore!! Mum to two wonderful boys!

    Hello ladies (and gentleman :))

Hope everyone's well and enjoying their weekends. We went swimming today, and LO giggled and smiled her way through the whole session, then had a three-hour nap :D

I need some inspiration please.... We've got a nice back garden, but don't use it much. Ladies with older children, do you have any suggestions for good outdoor toys and/or fun stuff to do in the garden for an almost two-year-old? I'm not after big stuff like slides and swings, as we have those in abundance in local parks, nor do I want to get planting as we're hopefully moving in the not too distant future... She loves her giant inflatable ball, but what else would be good (and not too expensive)? Ideas most welcome :)

DD smiled at DH for the first time today! :D he was so chuffed.over got some good video of them 'chatting' and DS saying hello to her too.

I'm a bit worried about weighing myself tomorrow as have eaten rubbish this week consisting of pizza, chinese, chocolate e tc

Mrshaworth2b, removing them from the object and turning your back on them is much what we did with DS, you have to do it over and over..... We used a stern AH when he did something he shouldn't and saved NO for important things like touching the cooker etc. You can only do what works for you which is trial and error, but the proper tone can work wonders!
I was very chuffed that I managed by voice alone to get DS to sit on the stairs, say sorry and then pick up the thrown object - first time in 3 years but at least it worked once ;)

We have a swing, 2 slides, sandpit and a climbing frame in our garden nutella! Next door have a trampoline, wendy house, ball pit and water station. All are used lots but DS also loves the mud, logs and stones to play with and finds ants, snails and woodlice great fun too.
Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck :)

Nutella. My just 4 year old (and now her 16 month old sister) love her play house. I looked for ages and spent £60 on a decent keter one. I do wish we put it away in winter as it did blow over and the corner of the roof cracked but it hasn't stopped use!! That and some small balls (that don't voice too much) and can be held in one hand along with some small bean bags are favourites here!

Fingers crossed on house. Been seriously lurking and not posting as don't feel like I've got much to contribute now my two are getting bigger ;)

We've sold ours too and hoping to get a date to exchange this week. Then just first schools to sort out with a crazy council who make up the rules as they go along it seems!!!
  • Saffagal, happy birthday to your LO. Hope the party went well x

Regarding baby groups, I went regularly when the girls were younger, but they were very clique-y. I tried very hard to make conversations with people and they were always polite but that's as far as it went. I felt like an outsider tbh. I did carry on going as long as possible for the girls but eventually stopped as I needed my dad to help with the girls and he didn't want to go anymore. I do feel guilty depriving the girls of socialising but I cant go on my own anymore, the girls always head in opposite directions and I end up running round like a crazy woman stopping them from eating things or pinching toys!

MrsH, we went to baby signing last week, its a 5 week course and when we got there all the other LOs were in bouncer chairs, the girls were the only ones moving around and they never sat still for a second :/ The woman running it kept getting signs wrong and when she couldn't remember some she just missed them out. Nobody else noticed but my mum was deaf so of course I noticed! At the end of the class the woman running it said we could transfer to another class for slightly older kids so will try that

Sand and/or water table, like this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1465039.htm

It's a great little thing for the garden, not too expensive and takes up very little space but as long as your child likes playing with sand or water you can keep them occupied for quite a while!

We also have an inflatable paddling pool for nice days, and a small pop up playtent. Either, filled with the plastic playballs, is loads of entertainment for little ones.

ETA: Bubble machine! Chasing and catching bubbles without the hassle of mummy having to blow them all!

On the behaviour front (sorry, I should check back who posted but I'm typing one handed thanks to baby and a 2 year old is distracting me!) it's all remove and distract, and repeat, at that age.

It's worth learning or using a sign for 'danger' to try and get them used to some things being definitely not for playing, but for the rest just move them away and encourage them to do something they can do. I'd love to say that it gets easier when you can reason with them to some extent but that isn't always the case!

And to the dad who posted, I think if your baby is going to nursery and to one group, plus meeting with friends that is plenty of interaction for the LO. Baby groups can be very cliquey and I can understand not wanting to go to many! I try to go to 3 a week just to wear my toddler out but I work on the basis that it doesn't matter if I don't get much adult interaction (I usually talk to someone but don't have anyone close at them, but there's no-one nasty!).

Sorry, have to keep posting before my toddler hits the keys and deletes everything (already lost one post!).

All is good here, got the drs check with baby later this week which is supposed to be at 8 weeks but they couldn't get me an appt until this week when he is 10 weeks. I had him weighed last week and he has put on over 3lb since birth, when he was already 8lb10!

Have a look on ebay and gumtree for local garden equipment! You get hardly used things on there for next to nothing.

Also a paddling pool with plastic balls (be prepared to round them up every night tho!) Bubbles are great, maybe one of those sand/water tables, or even just a washing up bowl and some plastic cups/a jug.

teddy bear picnics are nice with a blanket on the ground snd plastic plates etc again I cannot say enough times that the tesco value plastic stuff is awesome for this :)

  • Thanks for advice re nappies. Leaks seem to have stopped as randomly as they started but I haven't changed anything.

Lo is 6 months now and I think the 6 month sleep regression is starting despite us only just having finished the 4 month one:( Lo has started refusing to go to sleep at bedtime and isn't settling until 2 hours later than normal. I'm not sure if this is caused by a) now in own bedroom b) it being lighter than usual thanks to the sun not setting until later or c) no longer needing such an early bedtime. Has this happened to anyone else?

Can anyone recommend a good large floor covering? I want something to cover a large area of the floor so I can leave lo to play safely. We've got carpet but lo is obsessed with licking and sucking so I can't leave him on the floor as he just sucks the carpet. We've got a dog and occasional slug visitors so I want to avoid this! I've tried using a blanket but I want something that's not made from fibres. I was looking at those big foam playmats which would be perfect but then I read something about them containing a dangerous chemical so some European countries have banned them? Also needs to be cheap and not something lo can scrunch up. Any ideas or suggestions? Has anyone got the foam mats, are they really unsafe?
