    DBS for the self employed, any paid or unpaid 'helpers' who work with you will also need a DBS if children are involved.
    Self-employed workers
    Individuals and the self-employed cannot apply for a DBS certificate of their own criminal record, as they cannot ask an exempted question of themselves.

    Options currently available are:

    a self-employed person who is eligible for a DBS check can ask the organisation that wishes to contract their services to apply for their DBS check
    individuals can get a basic check from Disclosure Scotland which provides details of any ‘unspent’ conviction

    You don't necessarily need a DBS check, and you may not be entitled to get one done on any helpers.

    Read all about it here.

    Actually you may do better to start here.

    I am not sure that what Mooloo is planning to do is a 'regulated activity'.

    Sue - As Mooloo is self employed and will be charging a fee to teach children, does this info in your link apply? "Individuals and the self-employed cannot apply for a check directly to the DBS."
    I haven't gone into it in much depth, but it seems to me she's in the same position as a private self employed tutor; I'm sure somewhere there must be info for that.

    The point is that I do not think Mooloo is engaging in 'regulated activity'. The definition has been tightened in recent years, so that you cannot insist on a DBS check for Uncle Tom Cobley and all just in case they might be within arm's length of a child in the course of their work.

    For example, from Community Matters:
    Anyone working with children, young people or vulnerable adults where their guardian or carer is not present, in any of the following roles or places, will need to be checked against the list held by the DBS, their employer is entitled to (but does not have to) request a DBS check:

    (i) unsupervised activities: teach, train, instruct, care for or supervise children, or provide advice/ guidance on well-being, or drive a vehicle only for children;
    (ii) work for a limited range of establishments (‘specified places’), with opportunity for contact: e.g. schools, children’s homes, childcare premises. Not work by supervised volunteers;
    Work under (i) or (ii) is regulated activity only if done regularly

    IF Mooloo starts offering a weekly children's class at which other adults are not present, that might be regulated. At a children's party, where at least some parents will presumably be present, it is not regulated because it is not regular.

    Personally I think DBS checks are often a waste of the paper and ink used to produce them, and in Mooloo's position I'd produce the CRB check carried out some years ago (if she got a copy of that).

    Alternatively, anyone can request a basic check from Disclosure Scotland. £25.

    I have a copy of the CRB so if someone wants that then I will produce it. I am expecting parents to be around certainly for Birthday parties. I thing that I shall be ok. I am sure the council will soon tell me if I am not.
    Certainly not going to be regular courses etc. Just one offs here and there.

    Another reasonable day, with work to do all day, and work carried over to do tomorrow.
    A few requests for info. A few browsers, and sold a few little hearts.
    A few ladies who sew coming to be nosey. I don't mind. It's all people through the door, and all so far have been positive.
    Not so much cash today. But I am still happy with my start.
    The fair is arriving tomorrow, and the parking is restricted as they set up in the Carpark in the centre. That may reduce footfall tomorrow.
    But I have enough to do anyway. Tomorrow is a shorter day. I close at 2pm on Wednesday, so told people Thursday for collection.

    Time to do the evening meal.

    DS and his GF still haven't had their money sorted out. Getting rediculous. They popped in today as they had to go to the Food Bank here. Which is just in the town hall up from the shop.
    They came home to use the internet and the printer. Stayed for a while and met up with one of his friends. DGD was thrilled to see her Uncle.
    My parents are back home safe and sound, and probably coming over to see me tomorrow.
    Just been chatting to them on Skype, I was so excited as I just got my first bookings on my first course next Saturday.
    So I need to get my act together and make sure that I have all the machines, fabrics, etc all ready.
    And probably plastic cups and squash for the children's course as well as tea and coffee making stuff sorted by then.
    I can do it. I can't believe that I am really doing all this.
    I'm actually living my dream!!!
