    Debt-free and Proud!
It's comments like this that make me wish we were close enough to hug you! you are doing so well though with this and an OH who fights back now and then with food spends etc.. Are you on meds for your depression or do you think it's primarily brought on by OH's shift work and bad weather etc..?

Thanks so much for this NSK, means so much. Yes I'm on meds, had PND after having my son and this time it's got worse. I do suffer from SAD too so that has a huge impact. I keep ploughing on because I am aware I have so much more that many others do not.

  • Lol kat, you sound like me. This is the 3rd time iv taken lessons and I had to retake my theory last month as I had let it run out! I dread to think of what I have spent in lessons  but I'm determined to pass! I hate having to rely on OH to bring me places, cant wait to have some independence. It will only be used for bringing the girls to school and doing the groceries etc. Plus the grand plan is to move out to the country so I will need to be able to drive when that happens. I'm hoping to book my test for the end of jan but will know better on 8th jan when I have my next lesson. My lovely OH bought me a little car for Xmas so he is bringing me out for lots of practice which I'm hoping will save me a bit on lessons.

I paid all my debts off last yr so am using this challenge to help me build up savings, hope that is ok? Want to save at least £50 a month. I'm rubbish at saving, as soon as it gets to £200 I'm thinking about what I can buy so I'm hoping this challenge will help with that. Have just transferred £100 over to my savings to start me off. Today will be a Nsd as I am planning to declutter and sort all the kids christmas toys. Will also sort through food cupboards and do my meal plan for the rest of the month xx

  • Beckyboo[/B] what a lovely daughter you have - she has been brought up well!! What a wonderful outlook she has but is she saving? I realised that if I put away £50 a month from when I started working religiously I would have about £10,000 now..something my Mum always told me to do and I never had the chance...

TiptoesDB and anyone else that has OH and kids on board - a big Whoop Whoop for you! makes life a whole lot easier or at least if they recognise that crazy NSK rules are making a bit of a difference even if it does mean no more snacks to be bought on an

What good advice! Have just spoken to her about all the things she wants to save up for over the next year and agreed that we will go and sort her out with a bank account over the next couple of days. She does have one in joint names with me but sure we can get it converted into one in her name that she can have access to. Sure they can also attach it to a savings account that she can't access so easily so that she can also transfer some of her money into an account for saving longer term. Thanks Kat - super duper advice!!!

You're also right in that it really helps having the children and hubby on board. For so long I kept how dire our finances were a secret from my husband because I didn't want him to worry ( he suffers badly with OCD, anxiety and at times depression). However, have had to accept that I can't do this on my own and needed him not only on board but also in the know about the reality of the situation. It has been really hard, especially knowing that by sharing the burden was causing him to worry/stress but it has eased my own burden a little and at least we are now working as a team. They day when we are finally debt free will now give us both an amazing sense of achievement which we will be able to share and enjoy.
The kids haven't been too hard to get on board as we never really spent too much on days out anyway. The main bone of contention has been the lack of snacks and treats but going to tackle that by allowing them to bake things they would like as snacks with what is in the house (within reason of course!!!!)

This is a LOT to deal with! Are you seeing someone about it though - for a chat on a professional level as opposed to just friends... I am worried about you know stuck indoors all day with no support if OH is out all day - how old are the littles?? How does the debt busting work - does it help you or adds more burden? Please by all means tell me to mind my own by the way.........

Beckyboo - your daughter should be really proud of herself (and you of her). How cool is that to save £1000 at her age!

Mrs GSR - DLP is me! To go in June 2013 midweek would have cost £630 for 4 nights and 5 days for B&B and park tickets and I think it was over £800 to go in feb half term this year. However by booking Feb half term 2015 we got it for £283!!! How good is that :j:j:j We are staying at the Disney Santa Fe Hotel btw which has a free shuttle bus or 15 min walk to the park.

Obviously I don't know how much flights will be yet (they were about £230 for both of us with one checked bag in June 14) but will keep an eye out for them becoming available and am not averse to a night in a travel lodge or airport hotel if needs be to get the best deal.

Should be a SFD today. Have spent a lazy morning reading trip advisor and pricing up the various add ons to see how much I need to save.

For this year I am planning a few camping trips which will be cheap and cheerful as I now have all the kit and maybe will squeeze in a weekend in York and/or at the seaside too. Will check out campsites for these also.

Have worked out I need to pay £80 per month off the credit card to pay it off this year and I reckon put at least the same in the holiday pot.

    To do list for Thurs/Fri...
    1. Sort avon
    2. Tidy kitchen table
    3. Take down Xmas decs
    4. Washing
    5. Cook gravy dinner
    6. Make trifle
    7. Make choc cake
    8. Tidy Xmas pressies and find homes for them
    9. Have a soak in the bath
    10. Visit mum
    11. Phone L
    12. Check bank accounts

Oooh Ooh Ooh if she is up for it then convert your joint one to her name for savings she can withdraw as she pleases AND see if you can open her an ISA for long term savings even if that is only £20 - she will feel proper grown up with one of them and will be ahead of all her schooly friend who mightn't know what they are - more incentive!:T:T:T
