willow_loulou wrote: »Pink and Fluffy congratulations! How wonderful! Can I ask how you did it? Did you set an amount or in dribs and drabs? Ive just cut up my card and need to work out how to pay back as much of that debt asap before my situation changes in April. Im thinking a bit of both (currently minimum is on DD so I dont miss deadlines and pay as and when but need to be firmer really)
Off to £land in a mo, really hoping for some of my list to be in today - I havemy tenner in its own purse and been trawling it around for ages now lol
Its taken me almost 2 years! My overdraft and other store cards had crept up to £1809.00 in total.
I opened a new current account in Jan 2013 when I lost my f/t job. No overdraft or any other methods of borrowing.
I cut up all my store cards & put my Barclay's card away. I still had about £200 a month going in, made up from p/t wages & child benefit. I transferre . £100 a month into my new account for clothing, Xmas & bday gifts and other treats.
I'm self employed part time, and get paid in cash. I buy all good/household shopping with this (bills come out of dhs wages) and anything left over at the end of a month also went into Barclay's.
I had the store cards cleared in 3 months, but the £1300 overdraft has taken longer, as I have been paying £40 a month in fees before I even started clearing it!!
Barclay's were awful, wouldn't offer me any kind of payment plan or reduce/freeze interest, and believe me, it has been a huge struggle!
I have had to cut back big time on xmas, clothes etc, and I can't remember the last time I so much as treated myself to a coffee!
I shop year round for Xmas, buying offers as & when I see them, always within my budget, and never paying full price lol!
My dh, although a wonderful man, refused to help out, as I had got myself into the mess by being stupid, spending far too much on pressies, designer clothes etc. I could, and still do, see why he has done that, by making me pay it off & struggle, it has guaranteed I will never get into that situation again!
Since getting my new job Monday, I was more than happy to use my saved £210 to pay the very last of my overdraft off!!!
Yes, its been a struggle, we have had to make do, and go without, but I cannot tell you how worth it it has been. Finally debt free!!!It's not about getting what you want, It's about wanting what you get.0 -
well done pinknfluffy, you should be very proud of yourself. i bet your Dh is proud of you for doing it on your won. As you say a lesson learned that wont be repeatedSPC~12 ot 124

Thanks for all the support everyone.
I'm very busy at work, which is a good distraction. And I know it was for the best - there were too many negative things that I kept overlooking in a bid to stay together. I was guilty of believing the line "love is enough", putting up with rather a lot of rubbish in the hope things might get better... I am still finding it hard to get used to though, especially in the evenings which are so quiet now. I suppose it is still early days. 19 months together, 3 days since we split up - is bound to still be raw.
The discussions re Father Christmas and the toothfairy are interesting. We get a few children in around year 2/3 who have decided they are not real, but the majority seem quite happy believing. We even have "tooth pockets" in my year 2 class, with a literal tooth fairy on them [a tooth with a smile, wings and a wand lol] for them to keep their teeth in when they fall out.
Got another couple of little bits for the tea hamper and the sweets hamper. I really must stop soon lol!
Had a strange incident today. A jiffy bag turned up, via Royal Mail, containing a piece of... cake! Addressed to me but without anything inside to say who it is from lol. I'm perplexed. We've not had a family wedding or anything like that for over 4 months, so I haven't a clue who it is from. I must admit, it doesn't smell so great either after being in the jiffy bag, so I'm finding it very easy to resist. Just want to work out where it came from.0 -
pinknfluffy congrats on the both & finally being debt free :T
hanley despite the fact they "know" my older ones still love the elf visits and gifts and they are very good at playing along for taz
aliaslotte sorry things didn't work out its hard even when you kind of expect it so give yourself some time
picked up the asda gift guide a few of the bits I like won't be available till end oct/beg nov so will have to remember to keep an eye open for them then. they will be doing a frozen gift set -pvc bag & eau de toilette 2 for £8 so may get that to go with my nieces other frozen bits.
they are doing a build your own rocky road house kit so might get that instead of doing a gingerbread one this yr?
the necklaces I ordered from china arrived and are really nice I might even order a couple more just need to find some pretty but cheap gift boxes for them unless anyone has any suggestions on a nice way to "gift" themthis year do something that scares you for courage is not the absence of fear just the knowledge that some things are worth the risk0 -

Thank you for that - I shall attempt something similar and the fact it has taken you 2 years is reassuring. I need to revisit my spending and tighten my belt a little more and do exactly what you have done.I am wondering about moving my 2 cards into one as the one with the least has doubled its limit now. I think I will see how I go before xmas then weigh up the charges again.Life happens, live it well.0
