Work out how much the ingredients cost you, then add the cost of cooking the cake. Christmas cakes take a long time to cook and I only ever cook one at a time as I find they cook better that way. Do you 'feed' the cakes before you ice them? That all adds up. Then add your time - even if it's only £5 an hour.

I make Christmas cakes for family & friends but don't charge usually. Last year I made a 10" square cake for us, a 9" round cake, two 8" round cakes and two 6" round cakes for my sons & daughters and their respective parents-in-law. When I roughly costed them out I had spent almost £100 - and that didn't include my time!
  • Hi All,

I've actually started Christmas shopping for 2014!! We've a new store opened in Weston town centre called "That's Entertainment" selling DVDs, CDs and Games. I have bought for my older nieces and nephew three Simpsons DVDs (Compliations from the good era) three for £5. Got my brother a Liverpool FC one which is that Champions League final from 2005 they won from 3-0 down, my oldest sister a Mariah Carey #1s DVD and a treat for my boyfriend (some film) for now.

Ideas what to get babies? My oldest sister has a two month old and my other sister gives birth in October.

    .

We had a That's Entertainment in town but it closed down. Used to love the 3 for £5 deals, was cheaper than renting a film :)

A shame that is :( I remember it in Merry Hill when I lived in the West Midlands. It does work out cheaper, plus it's good for back-catalogue stuff.

Oh dear, I wrote earlier that I had all the Christmas presents sorted for my grandchildren but then I saw two more bargains (a Tonka town prison and Disney Planes Propwash Junction) which I have reserved from Argos - just under a tenner for both. I have got to stop looking at the deals site. Luckily it is the little one's birthday coming up in one month but I already bought him a Bananas in Pyjamas toy (another bargain of course).

Seriously, I think I have to stop now.

We are not doing Christmas at our house this year so I don't have to hunt for table presents for all the adults but I will really miss doing that actually.

Maybe I can help my daughter (who is doing Christmas lunch this year and is very busy) by looking out for bargains. It is so addictive.

Morrisons are selling 'boot jacks' for 28p each. ideal as a stocking filler/hamper filler/secret santa?
