Thanks for the info, I had a wee check and there is a couple of flights to Vegas afterwards in case we don't make the connection. We were in immigration for 1 1/2 hours last year at McCarron, so am caution about these short connection times.

you could check here to get an idea what average and maximum waiting times are...maybe check the day of the week you are arriving for a few weeks to get an idea. It would make me really nervous having <2 hours pretty much anywhere, but that's just me. :) Checking later flight times is a good idea as at least you have an idea what options there might be if there is space.

We have had to cancel our Vegas holiday (lowcostusa) for Nov as by chance noted that BA changed our connecting time back up to Edinburgh from 2 hours to 8 hours. BA said we could go via Glasgow but it would cost us £200 each if we wanted an earlier connecting fight. So we decided to cancel.

We are now looking at the United flights from Edinburgh-Newark-Vegas, but the connecting time at Newark to Vegas is 1hr 45 mins, has anyone done this route and is it doable to get our connecting flight??

    Thanks in advance

I would never want a connection of less than 2 hours at Newark on an international arrival. We had a 4 hour lay-over (luckily) at Newark in May this year, the queue at immigration & customs was massive as several international flights all arrived at once!! It took more than an hour to clear I&C then head to our LV connection, which meant we had to go through the TSA security check & once again it was a massive queue and another hour to get through!! Newark is almost as bad as Chicago O'Hare for queues/ hold-ups at security. You can check here for wait times, http//awt.cbp.gov (take the average as a minimum) and to see how many flights arrive at the same time as yours,

  • I'm sorry, and I don't mean to be rude, but do people actually read posts before replying.
The person asking about connection times,is because flights have been changed. My reply was relating to our 3-4 hour layover being changed.flights are booked and paid for with ample time to make connections, the stupid airlines then change them to inappropriate timings.
Making you wonder why you your time, and possibly extra money, choosing appropriate times for said connections.
It may be because I have just got in after a night out on the drink, but please read post correctly, and realise is not us that pick too short a layover, but the aiirlines that change them.Dont post comments as of we are stupid, and have not given ourselves enough time to make connections.
It. Is bad enough that the airlines mess us about, without having to listen to people on here making out we don't know what we are doing.
Our trip in November will be our third to the states this year......I think by now I know how to book flights.

As. I say....just had a night out with wife and daughter, before taking her of to uni tomorrow....so probably shouldn't post while under the influence, but don't like people making out we chose to get messed about by airlines, and making life difficult to catch connections......rant over.....probably will apologise for post in the morning.:o
  • Oh by the way.....it's usually a lot more than a £100 each difference between direct, and one with a connecting flight.
If it was only £100 difference, everyone would pay the difference to go direct.

Sorry you feel so offended Brats64, but my response was not to your post nor was it regarding any particular airline booking policy.

eva11 asked advice re a 1hr 45m connection at Newark. After undergoing the arrival ordeal of Newark on several occasions, I was only passing on my own experiences there and trying to be helpful.
  • Oops :D
Let's calm down people, we're all friends here :) I don't think anyone has misread a post. Unless you took umbrage to jonesMUFCforever's post, but maybe that's rather because you don't like Manchester United ;)

Brats64- sorry if you took offense to my reply...in both cases I understood that the situations weren't of your choosing...my reply was in no way meant to suggest that either of you were stupid...just that I would be nervous about <2 hour connection time, however it came about.

Just my opinion here but for the sake of saving maybe a hundred quid each I would prefer direct flights. No messing once you take off get some shut eye and land in your destination.

Not everyone wants to fly from London or Manchester though.
I will pay a little bit more than a direct flight price to fly from Norwich, when transport to london, parking and poss overnight stay are taken in to account it can work out cheaper/similar.

I wouldnt want a 1 hour 45 connection at Newark other airports it would be doable
