Excellent idea. I'd highly recommend opting for the real thing, i.e. the national park - and not Grand Canyon West (AKA West Rim) which is over-commercialised and nowhere near as good.

If you're up for suggestions for other places to visit, albeit in a totally different direction, how about Zion National Park in southwestern Utah? IMHO it's magnificently beautiful.

Do you have shares in this place?

Every post you make is about here and Youtube videos.(still wondering if there's a scam here;) )

Who-in their right mind-goes to Zion when staying in Vegas:eek:

    Give it a rest-please:cool:

"West rim" (not sure that's geographically accurate) is still the GC and still impressive
Not as impressive as Torroweap but hey, it's still the GC.

    Before you ask:

    Been there, done that:D

Only been to 30 USA states-adding a few more in a few weeks.

    BTW OP
Venetian standard rooms are huge and IMHO awesome. At the right price:cool:

WE DID!! We went for the day - in 2001 - when we were a lot dafter, got married there, had too much Vegas sun, were fed up of getting static shocks in the Sahara and thought that we would never get to go to the USA again, so, we thought 'lets go to Zion'
Never again, up at 5.30am, got there at about 11am, pottered about, got the compulsory souvenirs (fridge magnet) and set off back about 5pm, to get back to Vegas for around 10pm - Got lost on the highway, but thank goodness for the Luxor Pyramid beam that we followed, it got us back to the Strip.
It was a lovely place, from what I remember, but obviously something that I wouldn't recommend as a day trip.
When we went back to the USA in 2011, we had 3 days in Yosemite Nat. Park. Now that is a place of beauty.

I know I've said it before but in some ways I preferred Zion to the GC (south rim)...something about being down and looking up vs being at the top and looking down...maybe if we had done one of the trips down into the GC itself I would have felt differently...we did Zion as a day trip and are (probably) planning to again when we go with my in-laws...so it's not completely crazy.

I do think an overnight at the GC is worth doing if it's of any interest to someone...I think paying a bit extra to stay at the rim is too...something about walking out of your room and BAM! there's the GC...that's pretty cool. One night was enough for us, but I know plenty of people who would take a few nights there as a break from Vegas quite happily.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Although it's possible to visit Zion in a day from Las Vegas, I wouldn't recommend it as it's far too much driving and not long enough in the park. The other poster was talking about an overnight stop at the Grand Canyon and I should have made it clearer that I was implying the same thing for Zion.

BTW I've no way of proving it, but there's no scam. I know YouTube posters can get paid for views but I don't know any of the creators and I don't receive any money or anything else for recommending their videos. Nor do I gain any benefit from the NPS by recommending the parks.

This is meant as an explanation for anyone who is not familiar with the names, more than a specific response to that post:

Before the development of Grand Canyon West, the national park service used the name "West Rim" to mean the Hermit's Rest area (within the national park), and that shuttle bus route was called the West Rim Shuttle, and the interchange between that shuttle and the village shuttle was called the West Rim Interchange.

Nowadays, to avoid confusion, it's called the Hermit's Rest shuttle bus route.

A lot of people nowadays refer to Grand Canyon West as "the West Rim" as a colloquial term but for people who remember the old usage it is potentially ambiguous and confusing.

Grand Canyon West is on tribal lands outside the national park.

It hit 100F in Vegas today (Friday) and likely to be the same on Saturday.

There was a shooting at the Palms on Thursday night and it was on lock down for a while. The man later died. It wasn't in the casino, but at a party in one of the suites.

It's the Billboard Awards at the MGM on Sunday and the place is already jumping.

We were at the Palms last night and wondered what on earth was going on when we left at around 9 pm. I had no idea something like that had happened, and haven't seen the TV all day. The place was awash with patrol cars and there were several parked across the street at Gold Coast.

    Thanks for letting me know.
