I've only hit on the potato for thickening trick recently.
You can thicken soups with breadcrumbs, too. Any leftover stale bits of bread, blitz them in the food processor until really fine, bag them and store in the freezer until needed. A great way to use up leftover bread.
Or, if you have any chestnuts left over from Christmas, puree them (if they're whole), and use these; though these will add to the flavour (the breadcrumbs won't).

Just saw this lovely depression analogy on fb:

So there's this guy walking down the street and he falls into a great big hole. A doctor walks by and the guy yells up to the doctor 'hey, I fell in this hole, can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it into the hole, and walks on.

A priest then walks by and the guy yells up to the priest 'father, can you help me? I fell into this hole and I can't get out'. The priest says a prayer, throws down a Bible and walks on.

And then a friend of the guy walks by and the guy yells up 'hey, buddy, I'm stuck in this hole and -' and before he can finish the friend jumps down into the hole.

'What the hell are you doing?' the guy says, 'Now we're both down here!'

'Yup', says the friend, 'But I've been down here before and I know the way out.'
Thanks so much for that - I'm just very slowly climbing out of that hole, having only just realised that I needed to call out!!

Thanks - off to do that now as the carrot & coriander soup I've got warming through seems a bit watery!
PS using the cheep stick blender to make the breadcumbs to save dusting off the food processor!!

T's are selling off their half circles of Christmas Stilton for £1. Very short dated but Stilton always seems better when its well ripened (and its hardly ikely to go mouldy !) and it also freezes. Bought one this morning, tried it at lunchtime and DH sent me back to buy soeme more - its pretty tasty.

OMG - very worried about the fish and how they are going to be rounded up and returned to the right owners.

:) When we were children we lived at Lowfield Heath (before Gatwick Airport bought up the whole village) & we had a flood & lost our goldfish from the pond.
The nice workers who were in an factory behind (NAS National Airport Services) had caught them all & gave them back in airport dishes :T
They were lovely - they used to give us airline packet food for our school trips.
Divine little salt & pepper pots with BOAC on them :D

Plus we had airplane seats in my Dad's Thames van. My sister & I had checked tweedy ones from British Caledonian. We could recline & had an ash tray each :rotfl:
