When my kids moved out they took what they wanted under the understanding that I'd keep the rest for 6 months and at the end of the timescale I'd dispose of what they didn't take.

After 8 months, the rooms ware redecorated and extra furniture taken out.

When my son moves out i'll do similar.

"Hello darling, I've boxed up all your kitchen and bathroom stuff so it's all ready for you to collect". Give her a month, then tell her you've put the boxes in the garage. If she wants to keep her new house minimalist, she can put the boxes in her garage!
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • Ooops. I score badly on this one.

I first left home at 18, for university. I'm now 35. Until my parents sold their family house last Christmas, "my room" in their house still had most of my childhood books / some old clothes / photos / my dolls' house, etc, still there. I cleared the room at the same time as helping clear the rest of the house.

Sounds like a lot of you had the right idea!

I've boxed up the kitchen stuff ready to take on Tuesday... I can pick up the sander when we're there and start the kitchen transformation on Friday! I'll ask her about the stuff in her room while I'm there!

when I moved out of 'home' into my own place I boxed up all of my bits & took them straight away but... my mum started clearing through her cupboards of kitchen wares, linen and other stuff & passed what she was wanting to get rid of on to me as well, most items were things that I didn't need or want

All the stuff belonging my 2 daughters (at uni now) is boxed up and in the loft :) Did it the minute they left.

They are always welcome back of course!

I think if I tried to do that with my three the ceiling would collapse under the weight! There is as much stuff left behind as the amount of stuff they take to uni with them. It's a good job we have a big house.
  • If daughter objects, why not say that if she isn't prepared to shift her gear she isn't fully committed to her relationship :-)

When I moved out, my mother informed me that if I didn't take my stuff with me it would be gone to the tip on Saturday. And true to her word, she did. I had left a bag of clothes [by mistake] and she suddenly wanted my bed gone too.

I was unable to get back by Saturday [due to work] so it all went to the tip.

    Awe.. that's cruel!

She's my only child and I suppose I'm going through the 'empty nest' stage but I just want to tidy up a bit without 'boxing her up'.

She had already sorted a few boxes out and labelled them 'car boot sale' and they are up in the loft until the summer. Now if she could just sort out the rest of her stuff while we are both off for school holidays that would be brilliant!

Oh, and she will always be welcome back home (if things don't work out) but she'll be in our (much smaller) bedroom when we have moved into hers, maybe at Easter!
