  • Presumably this is going to be the next big thing, with every single fault on a VW assumed to be connected with their emissions-fiddling.

At this point, I knew my car has been effected with the emission test.

    You had me at 'Golf'.
  • After going though all the EGR valve issues with vw I now find myself in the middle of the emissions call back trouble. it was in December last year when I battled with vw uk. Anybody know if there is a connection with both. Cheers
  • My theory (see post 251) is that there must be a connection, as it seems to much of a co-incidence that the valve designed to reduce NOx emissions has nothing to do with the dodgy software that gives false NOx readings. But then, I know nothing about engines..
  • Hi,
Just bought a MK 6 1.6 Blue Motion not knowing of any faults.Had 2 golfs for the
last 15 years with no bother at all.Car has full service history but was bought from
    a different dealer.Got a 3 month warranty with car ,its done 63,000 miles,any views
of what i should do if faults appear ?

    thanks for any replies.
  • Affected 1.6 mk6
Have also had issues relating to EGR, have EML light on currently but no noticeable issues with the car yet - have people tried various cleaning sprays before forking out the massive bill?
The fault has been present for around six months now as I don't want to give vw the money to diagnose it as "your EGR has failed and needs replacing". I am hoping that the more people listing their issues to watchdog and forums like this will drive some kind of legal action or pressure to extend warranty on this and admit responsibility.
The warning came on around 70,000 miles on a 59 plate.
Volkswagon truly have (had) a false reputation for reliable, efficient cars. Should have bought a banger.
  • Hi there, not sure if this thread is still live, I am experiencing a very similar issue.

I have a 59 Plate 1.6 Bluemotion Golf 82K Miles. It is intermittently losing power but not throwing any error codes at all. When it does it you can put your foot down and the engine revs but the car has no power. I have taken it to my local (Independent) garage 3 times and they have been unable to replicate the fault. They have checked the fuel pump and that is fine, they replaced the fuel relays and also checked the MAF and o2 sensors and that hasnt helped. It had a full service 2 weeks ago but the problem persists.

If i take it to VW how do i get them to recognise the issue? I dont want to pay them to just plug in a VAG COM as i already know that it isnt throwing any codes out.

How did they diagnose your issue?

The symptoms (but not the lack of codes) sound very like the sticking variable wotsits in the turbo.
http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/142345-sticking-turbo-vanes-solved/ - post 7 describes the symptoms. Do they sound familiar ?
  • Hi all, OP here

Thanks for taking the time out to update your tails of woe on this. It is appreciated as it shows the issue is still present and affecting many others.

The recent news on the VW emissions scandal is interesting as even though it appears there is no immediate link between that and the EGR valve; I am hopefully someone with the right technical knowledge may/will investigate it and hopefully, we will all be in a position where the fee we paid to have the EGR replaced is refunded. Wishful thinking I know.

Please do keep advising Watchdog on the issues you get as the more of us that do it, the higher the chance of them taking the story on.
Also, it will be interesting to hear if any of you get a letter from VW to recall your car. I will be sure to let you know if I get one and what they advise will happen/be modified.

    Cheers

Add me to the long list of EGR failures! My Golf GTD 62 plate 54k on the clock had its EGR replaced at an independent VW specialist yesterday, costing me £600. No goodwill as car is second hand, VW customer care not interested. According to the garage I went to, this is a very common fault in this engine and they are hopeful it will be a recalled at some point in the future, so fingers crossed! The replacement EGR valve is an upgraded version, which should hopefully last alot longer. What this says to me is that VW are aware there is a problem otherwise why bother to make a modified version? I have reported the problem to Watchdog, logged a complaint on aspokesmansaid.com and complained via Twitter using the hashtag #vwEGRscandal if anyone else is on Twitter please join me in sharing your EGR woes using the hashtag :)
  • little_patients - you should of gone to another dealership to get your EGR resolved. VW should of taken care of you regardless whether you're the second owner of the car. My EGR went (see earlier post) and I decided to take it to VW Derby and see what they had to say about it, they quoted me £1,042! I said immediately, I am not paying for a common fault on the car. Reading several threads, and ringing up VW customer care (who are not helpful), I went in the next day and spoke with the same chap and just made up some nonsense about how VW customer care said that VW will recover the costs at least 70-80% of the final price, he understood that VW offer that service due to the number of faults and to say the least, its a common fault. Eventually, I was quoted £360 inc VAT for the replacement and labour charge (2 year warranty on parts and labour)

Although I was still unhappy with the price, I decided to take my chances elsewhere. So I continued on shopping and all mechanics I went to suggested, go back to VW, we can't beat that price. I took it to a VW specialist, they quoted £860. So with no other cheaper option, I stuck with VW and it should hopefully be resolved today! (16/12/15).

Furthermore, I have received an action today (16/12/15) on the emissions scandal and bad news to EGR fault users, the EGR does NOT come under the resolution.

2.0 + 1.2 engines - It is a simple 'software update' to the engine management. (30 mins to fix)

1.6 engine - Fitting a 'Flow Transformer' directly in front of the air mass sensor; and a 'software update' (1 hour to fix)
