Mk6 Golf and EGR valve issues

There's a company in England called Darkside Developments that specialise in diesel tuning and modification.
They're able to supply and fit an EGR delete kit which removes the EGR valve and replaces it with different hardware for most of the 1.6 and 2.0 TDi engines. They will change the software on the car as well so it ignores the EGR valve sensors and the engine management light will stay out.
From memory the price of all of this is roughly the same, if not less than supply and fitting of new EGR valve. All your base are belong to us.0 -

Sorry for delay in responding. Below is what the dealer told me.I am happy to show you the removed EGR valve, however because Volkswagen UK are paying for that part I am unable to let you have it physically. Once the job is complete that will be sent back to Volkswagen as per warranty/goodwill procedure.nervousnovice wrote: »I did ask for the defective part, which was given to me without any challenge.0

Hi all, OP here
Thanks for taking the time out to update your tails of woe on this. It is appreciated as it shows the issue is still present and affecting many others.
The recent news on the VW emissions scandal is interesting as even though it appears there is no immediate link between that and the EGR valve; I am hopefully someone with the right technical knowledge may/will investigate it and hopefully, we will all be in a position where the fee we paid to have the EGR replaced is refunded. Wishful thinking I know.
Please do keep advising Watchdog on the issues you get as the more of us that do it, the higher the chance of them taking the story on.
Also, it will be interesting to hear if any of you get a letter from VW to recall your car. I will be sure to let you know if I get one and what they advise will happen/be modified.

Just had my second EGR valve replaced on my 2010 1.6 TDI A3 today and VW confirmed that my engine was one that would be called in for modification. They were very helpful and replaced the second valve under parts warranty as it was only replaced 20,000 miles ago less than 2 years. I'm still out of pocket though for the first one though £700 and £100 for the diagnostics on the second. Tempted to sling in a claim form with the small claims and see if VW will settle!0

Re compensation, I still say that the failing EGR valves are a manufacturers problem, and I would want to have all the costs incurred by me in getting the EGR replaced refunded.
Re the cheating software, I will now have a car that is not the car I was expecting to buy, and inevitably it will be worth less if I come to sell it. So, compensation should reflect the differences in value.0 -
Hi all
Following on from my earlier post about knowing if your car is affected by the emissions issue; I've just found the official VW website address which can tell us in advance.
All you need is your VIN number (which can be found on the V5C, MOT and by the windscreen of the car).... I've checked my Golf and you guessed it; it's affected by the recent emissions issue.
It will be interesting to know, if all of you who have had the EGR valve issue are also affected by the emissions recall.
The website to check this is: www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/dieselinfo
Appreciate your time in advance in checking the above.

Have checked, and my car is listed as affected.
Also today we heard from Paul Willis, VW UK managing director, who said "that cars fitted with the 1.6L diesel engine would need the physical remedy (of new fuel injectors)."0 -
Affected. 1.6 Bluemotion 2010.
I had EGR replaced 18 months ago. Two years warranty and some people are reporting second failure of this part, so I really consider getting rid of this car before April next year. I'm guessing it will be difficult to sell until emmision issue will be sorted by VW .....0 -
Golf GT TDi / 2.0 - 2011 - Affected with the emissions. Service Action ( EA189 diesel)
Yesterday, 14/10/15, I just parked up with a flashing pre-glow flashing light (coil) and with the essence of loosing a little power (limp mode). Shortly after taking the key out of the ignition, I decided to restart the car and drove it a little, regained power with the engine management light lit up. At this point, I knew my car has been effected with the emission test.
So i decided to ring up VW (Parkway Derby) today (15/10/15), and see whether the pre-glow (coil) flashing light had any correlation to the emissions software at all, obviously they denied it.. However, VW employees do not know what the fix will be, so how sure are they? If they doesn't know what the fix is, then in fact they do not know anything in relation to the emissions test to be resolved, nor can they comment on other parts of the car that test the emissions.
So, I took the car to a friend who owns the garage (15/10/15) and checked it for diagnostics, and it shows there's two codes, both being EGR Valves! However, we didn't clear the codes, but all of a sudden the engine management light went off. I presume the light will switch back on shortly. Nevertheless, there's not indication from VW what the fix is, hopefully it is including the EGR valve - that will be interesting!0
