That can be a fairly big error to be perfectly honest, it could be the difference between something being done on time & something not being done at all. While it does seem a little OTT for a "fat finger" mistake it's one that should have been double checked before completion - particularly if it has an effect on the above. It's all situational ofcourse, but in a world whereby data entry can be done by a lot of people looking for work with as close to 100% accuracy as is possible, one mistake can be enough I'm afraid

Fair enough if it had a huge knock on effect and cost the company. But as the op said, it had no impact on the company.

The first person made one error on a spreadsheet.

The second person has had multiple complaints from rolling in work really late (12 noon) and smelling of alcohol..
Getting to work 2.5 hours late claiming the wind stopped them getting to work even though they live 10 minutes away.
Falsifying the timesheet in front of the MD.....and when pulled about it claimed they couldn't read the 24 hour clock!!!!!

Do you know for a fact that was all person 1 was sacked for? Seems unlikely, especially considering all Person 2 got away with before they finally pulled the trigger!

I read it as the OP doing the dismissing rather than someone crying to her about it but if it is the latter then as you say there could be more to it
Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked
  • I'd be sacking the person that employed person number 2 without checking thier references, on which you asked about time keeping, and that the interview didn't include a simple test to check if they could read a speaking clock.

Your company sounds like the type that would time somebody when they went to the toilet.

Glad to say I'm not as cold hearted as you - what an existence that must be !

    Really?

This is the cold hearted one that comes on a forum to express concern?
I'm assuming they work in HR and this is part of their job.

I doubt it is just a spreadsheet error, likely that the manager is a plank or the person is hard to work with.

I hope the spreadsheet error person has short service, or you might be opening your New Year with an ET to deal with.

Come on OP, there must be more to the sacking than a simple date error, if not it is very harsh and plainly wrong to dismiss them. I take it you were told to do this rather than came to this conclusion yourself?

You are indeed correct I was told to dismiss them as their own manager
    was on holiday.

I did ask if I could call the agency (as there were employed via an agency) and ask them to do it when they went home and I was refused.

If they are employed by the agency you would have to inform the agency you no longer require then and really shouldn't have sacked them in person

I agree but like I said I were merely following orders from above.
