Frugalsod, your broad assessment is correct.

After years of abuse of consumers with arbitrary card fees, the OFT and I think CAA (interestingly because IAA is Ryanair's Air operators Certificate rgulator) finally forced them to stop the abuse last year.

As a regular customer of many years I think Ryanair is beginning to mellow a little as a more mature citizen (and is raking it in now with hiked fares that often are more expensive than competitors), but I think you are still right to doubt their offer and to watch out for new tricks
