I did say it was 'just a thought'. :p
I know a lot of Christians who do 'do' Santa, so yes you can do both, we just chose not to, just don't feel the need (as I have said before and won't go an about again!).
Perhaps if I wasn't a Christian my view would be different, perhaps not.
I suppose the main thing is that folks have a happy Christmas, and enjoy the day for what they make it. :)

    exactly :D

DD recently asked me if santa was real, shes 6. I didnt want to come outright and say no, but said he was similar to god/bible. In that he is a story/tradition that has been passed down thru generations and it was up to her to decide whether she wanted to believe in the 'story' or not.

I also pointed out that if she decided that she didnt believe he was real, she should not spoil things for her friends, who do believe

Out of all my children, she is the one who has questioned it at the youngest age. My middle child was 11 before she even considered he wasnt real and then still wasnt sure whether to admit he might not be, just incase she didnt get any presents.

I always said that when I get asked a direct question like, I will be truthful which is what you have managed to do without upsetting the magic (if she wants it t continue). Thanks for sharing depending on the age ds gets round to asking this eventual question I shall be saying something along those lines.
  • My six year old seems to be sceptical of Santa, tbh I think she's just going along with it for our sakes! If she ever outright asked I would probably tell her the truth though, that it is a bit of magic made up by parents or something. A child smart enough to question something won't benefit from lies and being undermined by their parents, especially since one day they'll find out anyway!

As a child I was terrified of Santa, I thought he was always watching me and would be in tears on xmas eve at the thought of a strange man in my house who judged me all year. I'd have been quite relived if my parents had told me sooner that he wasn't real! (I found the presents in the cupboard when I was 8 or 9)

OP, there are some good suggestions on here for stories you could tell your son, since it's so close to christmas you may want to go with one of those, but maybe next year if he is still sceptical you might want to have the discussion before xmas. There is a nice letter here that you could use.
