Quite. My 6 yo wants to play video games that involve shooting & violence, some of his friends are either allowed or have older siblings who do & he hears all about how awesome they are.

I would never dream of allowing him to make that choice himself or when he wants to stay up past bedtime & he has school next day.

Sure, I could let him make the choice to stay up till ten but then he would be in a bad mood, tired & unable to concentrate at school.

But I don't, I make the choice for him.

    I call it: Parenting.
Of course we make the choice of what they are exposed to, limit/censor/whatever you call it, I just choose to limit exposure to and promotion of santa. If DS kept going on about it, which he doesn't, but if he did then we'd maybe read more stories etc about it, but put it across as just that.
Isn't it funny how an innocent post about what to do re santa and a 6 yr old has turned into a parenting debate?:eek::eek:

Yes- the poor OP just wanted some advice about what so say to her son then was frowned upon by another poster for 'lying' to him because they themselves didn't want to encourage the terrible thought of Santa at Christmas .....funny how things can veer off topic so quickly.

    Yes, me too.

My eldest son has never got over not being allowed to go and see the movie Austin powers "The spy who shagged me";) Apparently he was the only one not allowed to go!! He survived.

I didn't think that would get past the MSE censor!
    :rotfl::rotfl:

I would not let my son watch Dallas or Grange Hill, to name but two. :) I think he's managed to survive in spite of that.

Exactly!! She comes out with these absurb posts about 'what she does' and then as soon as you say something that proves shes wrong does she reply? No. She either puts her hands up and says I dont care or she ignores you and starts going on about something else you said eariler (that shes probably already said before)

    Its nothing new!!

Prove me wrong. Who's proved me wrong?

    What haven't I replied to?!

    Thanks for the permission! ;)

You make statements and then when people comment you take umbrage.

Child led parenting is not a new concept. Most of us have done in babyhood, no set times for feeds, bringing a child into bed if they will not sleep etc. However, once their personalities start to develop, as a responsible parent you have to set boundaries and rules. You cannot have a six year old dictating or leading the parents. Well, you can but it will end in tears, usually about the time puberty hits.

I've only taken umbrage where I've been totally misrepresented.

Yes, there are rules. But within those rules DD can make certain choices for herself. She's not bringing herself up!

    But she is 3...

When she is four she will be at school, and presumably then she will want to watch the same progs as her friends do? And, you cannot live or keep her as self contained and controlled as you appear to do now forever. She will be exposed to Santa.

She'll be a few weeks off 5 when she gets into school. It will be Xmas 11 weeks later. If she does believe for a year or 5 it won't be the end of the world!

She already watches the shows her friends watch. They're all on cbeebies.

I know, but he was 13 and it had shag in the title!!;)

He is 29 now and we were laughing about it just the other day.

I actually loved that film as a teenager :rotfl: Im 30 so similar age to your son. Definitely saw it with my friends though would have been mortified to watch it with a parent!

Well if she goes to school, talks to other children and starts believing in it, shes going to be one disappointed child if there is no stocking or presents from Santa.

As I said, such a change to the situation would need a discussion with DH and potentially a new approach. But I shan't pre-empt that when it's not currently an issue. She may well go the way of OrkneyStar's son and it's all a fuss about nothing. ;)
