Thinking back to Pre-USSR history, the reason for the extended life of humans in the 80 years that followed was in part due to increased (but still basic by Western standards) post-natal healthcare.
Ah, with you, and Gen. Sorry, have been concentrating on other things instead. I would like to think of phone bird having a long a fruitful life. Another very big variable is of course that I've heard it but not seen it, so it may not even be a starling... hopefully it is at the very least a bird, and not some weird phone that goes off at 4-5am in Summer only. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Ooh you've set me off thinking now.
I reckon if I was to measure longevity in animals/birds with a high death rate at the start I'd probably adjust for it: perhaps only count those that survived to be juveniles or something.
Big fire in Sydney today. A crane that has been leaking fuel for a while caught fire (who'd have thought that could happen).
It was quite exciting for me as I got the ferry for the first time in yonks. Mrs Generali came to pick me up from the wharf with the Generalissimos which was nice. I got some more course reading done on the boat. It's nice to have something constructive to do which is for me.
I spent all day at work with a small brown splodge on my shirt which loads of people picked up on. The reason? It wasn't a coffee spill or a shaving cut. My daughter decided that she wanted an extra cuddle before I went to work. She was in the middle of making her specialty dish: Nutella on toast.vivatifosi wrote: »Ah, with you, and Gen. Perhaps the person with the wake up call only opens their window in the spring and summer or the bird is there year round d but only sings when the sun rises and it is only at this time of year that you are around to hear it?
Now the back up computer has stopped working, it boots to a post screen but won't even go into BIOS set up. Why does IT fail so often :mad:I think....0 -
A question for the NP Courserans...
Sponge or Roomba? I have grand Roomba aspirations atm, but know that I could well end up being a sponge. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? My GP's just introduced a system where you can see available appointments and book your own online, which is a fantastic idea. Does yours have similar?
Mine's done that for a while now, it's brilliant. You get the doctor of your choice if it isn't urgent and if you need to see one the following day, you take your chances. Have to ring and beg for a same day appointment.;)I know exactly what you mean. DW is having some very confusing thoughts, wishing it would all just end. I hope that she doesn't look back on this and feel guilty over that somewhat inappropriate thought. It is confusing because this state of near-helpless indignity is absolutely NOT what MIL wanted for herself. She always said that she would rather shoot herself first.
With the rider that we are all very different, I certainly wanted Mr Bugs to leave this mortal coil and pronto. Well, what I actually wanted was for him to be miraculously well again, free from confusion and indignity and well, the sheer pointlessness of it all. But that wasn't going to happen, so it was better to wish it was over for his sake as much as the family. I haven't felt guilty for entertaining those thoughts since.0 -

I do think it is a real bird... I hope it is a real bird, if not someone has a bizarre electronic device planted in my garden, it is definitely coming from there or an adjoining hedge, not another house... In terms of the time of year and it singing at a different time, that's a possibility, but I do get up later at weekends (esp in Winter) so should still hear if it was here. I heard it this morning through a closed window, so it isn't a variable that is based on hearing through an open window.
I think it is cool that I have a bird in my garden that sings like a phone. The first year it drove me nuts as it woke me up every morning, but now I am happy to hear it is back. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I think that's a way of seeing how you progress vs your aspirations. I've set low aspirations but we'll see what happens. I'm doing well so far in terms of eating up the reading matter.
I've put myself down as a sponge.0 -
Very tempted to, now that everyone's saying what a fine upstanding man he was. The hypocrisy of it is getting on my goat a little bit, particularly when it's Boris saying it. He did his job, was well paid for it, and still lived in a council house even though he could afford to buy his own.
In fairness, i've probbly not said much nice about him, but I do so agree about the hypocrisy, I tend to feel rebellious!lostinrates wrote: »You know those nights when you are counting your blessings and one of them is that there are but 33 minutes left in the day?.

Appreciate that Gen, thanks. I've been looking forward to this course for about 6 months, since I just missed the start of the last one. I wanted to be all over it, but personal circumstances are conspiring against me at the moment. I too have put myself down as a sponge. If I can manage better than that in terms of time I'll be delighted. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I wonder what the name for a collective of Nice People is, as say when a meetup happens.
That's not a hint by the way. I'm not organising one any time soon! There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
