A Ukrainian friend of ours has been going back to Ukraine for things like MRI because she feels its so much better there than NHs and cheaper than private here. She has private healthcare cover over here with work but excess work out as more than MRI scan plus consultations.

Incidentally, was meant to be going 'home' this week.

I'm really interested by it, having NHS mother and having come from a country that is now with this health system.

In Georgia, the initial consultation is free, but you have to pay for anything further unless you're under 5, over 60 (I think now 65) or are on a low household income (low income in Georgia is classed at around 400 lari/month, or the amount you start to become full taxpayer as employee (below this, you subtract 1800 lari, which above 4800 reduces by 50%. Tax is flat 20%)

Well that's the key here as well. Taxes are a lot lower than in the UK:

Taxable income Tax on this income 0 – $18,200 Nil
    $18,201 – $37,000 19c for each $1 over $18,200
    $37,001 – $80,000 $3,572 plus 32.5c for each $1 over $37,000
    $80,001 – $180,000 $17,547 plus 37c for each $1 over $80,000
    $180,001 and over $54,547 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000

Remember there's no NI over here. Plus you can claim loads of stuff back against your tax. I claim my internet connection and computer back for example because I post on here about economics and my job is connected to economics.

I pay $247/month for health insurance I think. This is the cover we get as a family of 4:

    http://www.teachershealth.com.au/our-products/extras-cover/top-extras/

Both Mrs Generali and I wear glasses/contacts so that's $500 of claims that go to the health insurance every year for starters plus a few hundred or more in dental claims. Then a few massages get put on too. I reckon if we all had a year where nobody got sick at all we'd still claim 4-6 months of premiums back.

I take it that means you are not going? Because of your health? Have you rescheduled and are/ were you taking fir with?

I don't know where "home" is; I'm guessing it is quite far away it involves a flight.

Sorry, I meant my Ukrainian friend was meant to be going home!

Her airport is currently blockaded or occupied or something. Interesting times, eh?

Home for me? Is where DH is. I think England is home. (I have a British passport by choice, though my mother is keen for me to get at least one other passport I think I'd never use) But funnily enough I've been homesick for other places in creasing ly in the last year. How can a kid who was a rolling stone have a home to feel homesick for? :D.

it appears there is nothing good on tv tonight, which is disappointing.

Sacrilege! Inspector George Gently was on last night.

RP? RP decided to .......vacuum the walls with an upholstery brush. :rotfl:

Now, I agree, its worth doing but when you are doing a spruce up because someone is coming and the floors are rather agricultural is NOT the time.....or is that just me? :D

This is the reason why I gave up having an office. If I micro-manage, things get done right, but I rob people of their independence and initiative. If I don't micro-manage, things don't get done right. I could never find a middle course, and it was stressful for me and the people I managed.

Of course, the solution is not to mind that things are not done right and to appreciate that 'done differently' is not absolutely necessarily the same as 'done wrong', although it often was. :)

And my DW would by now be correcting my grammar "done correctly", "done wrongly", so we all have our hang-ups.

Her employers have just extended her contract by a year, so the paranoia about ageism was unjustified.

I am guessing you don't have three dogs, a woodburner and people who tramp through the house in boots? :rotfl:

Have you thought of getting one of those auto-vacuum things for the cats to ride on?

One of my neighbours has put their house on the market. Was astonished when I saw how much. It's over 20% higher than the last one sold for a couple of months ago. Mad. I'll be interested to see if they have any interest.

    Has it sold yet?

You gotta chill and let it all go man....

When it comes to health systems I wonder if Australia suffers from the same problem as the US of over treatment, the specialists have every incentive to overtreat (more money for them) and a real downside legal risk if they could be considered to have under-treated or under investigated. this is the only advantage of NHS systems strictly controlled by budget that I can see, health costs less than 10% of GDP rather than closer to 20%.
    I think....

    .

Works as badly the other way round GDB. I can delegate so much that I have little to do and let people go their own way. Makes office people a bit nervous though sometimes, they like more structure and guidelines. I like to think I'm empowering them to grow.... Truck drivers tend to be loners anyway and hate interference, so I can pretty much leave them alone, the idiot ones get weeded out quickly.
