DH's dress code for work is smart casual. Mostly he wears chinos, linen or cotton shirt without tie and nice boots. If it's cold he'll occasionally wear a jumper, but never a novelty one. And never a Labrador. Or red trousers.

He's very colour blind and once went shopping for chinos by himself. The lovely sedate grey pair he thought he'd bought were actually bright green and would not have looked out of place on Bucks Fizz when they represented Britain at Eurovision.

DH really wants work to participate in the take your dog to work day thing. The impracticality of this is beyond him, the dogs are a LONG way from work. He'd have to choose one.

Did you get a skirt that whipped off to wear next to him?

Sadly no (on the skirt front).

If fir did take just one dog to work which one would he choose? I am imagining big dog would be too big, so between dog dog and kiwi.

I think he'd want to take them on annual rotation. He'd probably try to squeeze big dog in first , but she'd hate it so I'd bed him to choose one of the others. I thing dog dog would get most out of it and be easier to leave alone in the office, She likes being 'special dog' and singled out for atrention. where as kiwi likes being one of the gang more. If it were a busy day though and lots going on, lots of people, kiwi would probably enjoy it more.

(Goes back to look at Aussie PM)

He's a pretty interesting bloke. He boxed for Oxford, was a Rhodes Scholar (like Bill Clinton) and trained for the Roman Catholic priesthood.

He takes his volunteer activities very seriously, even now he's PM he volunteers with the Rural Fire Service, the volunteer fire fighting group he's been with for years. We had some pretty nasty bush fires back in early summer and he did a 14 hour stint with the RFS. AIUI, he still does plenty with them on the weekends, Aussie news being very much a 24/5 affair (weekends are all about sports, not politics) and I think he still does triathlons.

He's also, IMHO, the only serious Australian politician to take Aboriginal affairs really seriously. Kevin Rudd did The Apology but that was only a small step in the right direction. Abbott is putting real money into Aboriginal communities and giving it to the community to spend rather than it being the White Man's largesse.

We are making it up as we're going along - we have put the offer in without actually having anything in place, have now decided first direct is the way to go so will be starting the mortgage application with them imminently aiming to get an AIP soon as we need to know whether first direct will lend if not alternative plans needed. Solicitor and survey I haven't even thought of yet but we are waiting for the chain to assemble.

Making it up as I go along is an understatement.

It's all a bit weird. Though I was saving, for years I watched HPI & thought, well, I'm being priced out...
Saw the house on RM. It has the advantage of being empty & I guess possibly looking for a quick sale. Went to look on the off chance having an awareness I've got a deposit & can repay a fair bit over the first 12 months. Liked it. Then it got a bit real.

I keep sitting here trying not to move in in my head, & thinking "there's so much to do" without feeling like I'm acheiving anything.

We'll not be paying off early nikkster.

Even if we had a windfall it would go into something else to do here.

We all have different finances and ways of balancing them. Michaels said earlier he sees no need to pay off early, he's right for him probably.

Lj wants to pay off ASAP, and so that's for him.

Very much so. Personally I have aversions to being in debt. Hence my preference to pay it off asap. But as you rightly say, choices are about specific circumstances. If all goes according to plan, I could move somewhere where no work is required for 5+ years. Hence funds can be directed towards paying it off. Your circs are different, where there are works needing doing, hence funds to be focussed on that.

DW generally tries to persaud me to wear a newer pair of jeans without holes in the knees when we go out, that is the closest to smart I do, if my trainers have got so old they need replacing so I am wearing a new pair they look slightly better than the old pairs. Again I might wear one of my newer tshirts a hoodie/wool sweater if it is cold.

I find the only way with house buying is to basically shut the brain down when thinking about the amounts of money involved as the scale means it is just not possible to compare amounts of that size with any other expenditure. A bit like 1 trillion of National debt and how that relates to paying 50p duty on a bottle of wine....
    I think....

Just finished doing my slides for the presentation I have to give on Thursday as part of the interview. Have to do them tonight as I'm travelling down tomorrow and staying in a hotel :D

Feeling well up for it. I'm a good fit for them I think, and I'm actually quite looking forward to the day. I know my stuff and I'm fairly confident presenting so it should be ok. It's the presentation and some group exercises, tour of the building, and a 20 minute interview.

Only snag is that the dress code is 'smart casual', which for me is an absolute nightmare. You know where you stand if it's a standard business dress thing, nice suit, cufflinks and all that. Sadly not so. I've got a nice jacket (brown), and a nice shirt and jumper, trousers I'm thinking chinos (supposedly these will make a good impression).

Yes. I've had some massive debates about what smart casual is. Generally, people seem unable to define it.
The closest I've managed to get, is no suit but not scruffy.

Apologies for the fact that this is of no help whatsoever.
Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Chewy is buying with a partner.
Jelly has been living at home (I think) for ages while building up his deposit.

You bought with neither of these advantages. You are doing well to have bought at all, after the financial fiasco of your relationship with your ex. :T
    Cut yourself some slack, girl.
Disappointing that I can only thank this once.

Agree. Nikks you've got yourself a lovely home in which you're happy. You've done it without putting yourself in risky scenarios.

Plus, you've had stuff to deal with in recent years that (I assume) chewy & I haven't.

Give yourself kudos for what you have acheived. Don't berate yourself by comparing yourself to others.

Oh hell, I forgot where the smart casual thing started.

If I was presenting and it was smart casual then I'd be in a dark or black suit with a white shirt and no tie. If you're presenting it's great to be the smartest dressed person in the room and the dress code allows it. It goes back to michaels's thread about behavioural economics. If you can be seen as the leader and you lead by presenting then the presentation will be viewed as better by participants.

If you're going to be introduced then make sure the introducer slips in something positive about what qualifies you to be on stage. 20 years of experience in talking rubbish on websites or Masters Degree in bishop strangling or something. It doesn't really matter but it really helps if the introduction builds you up.
