I would say a charwoman (or indeed charperson) was a cleaner.

She is a bit of a cartoon. Not unpleasant just not very with it.

Her husband collapsed at a old students thig at a medical school (where they met) and all these doctors/surgeons etc just stepped over him. Her sister (who'd gone with them as a guest as knew lots of the people as was close to them socially) in the end called the ambulance after being unable to get any one there interested. I always find that the most horrific idea, that a doctor can collapse in a room of doctors and nobody but a non doctor helps.

I am the captain of my soul.[/B][/I]

Invictus is perhaps too noble and brave, but , maybe equal in defiance.

(Oh beggar, this reminds me I got some weird poetry chain mail thing from a friend which I hate, chain mail stuff, but I forgot to do it for her, now I feel a heel about that)

Please don't worry silver car, I'm indestructible...:).

Funnily enough you are saying EXACTLY what I have been saying for years.

Medicine is reactive though. One of the things that always makes me smile wryly is one of the things they have on my list of ailments is sciatica. I always used point out that sciatica is a symptom not an issue in its own right. I've been at it so long now I cannot be bothered to point this out anymore.

I cannot really explain without putting more detail about my I insides than I am comfortable with about why the causes aren't that easy to treat. But things that one medical depts would like to another one feel would be contraindicatory for them and vice versa. Some have always been particularly in knots with themselves, and then things that I feel would help me they have said in the past either I couldn't tolerate or now aren't pressing enough to consider. That's partly why I had the referral to the rheumalogist really last year to start YET again from the beginning with someone who had a 'whole of picture ' view. Treatment is very 'bitty' I agree.

I really feel this was less bad initially with a Private GP who was more focused on orchestrating things rather than signing them off to someone else/other people. They were particularly good gps though, and incredibly focused on health rather than the economics of health. Still, the system still is and it is. I cannot do that now, and I'm not particularly bothered to .

I actually say the same about how we deal with autism or something like ADHD in this country, everything is about how we deal with a symptom rather than tackling the cause.

So I took it back to basics, ignored what everyone was telling me and dealt with the problem that was causing the symptoms (freaking out, meltdowns, being bloody awkward etc).

For example, a child with ADHD has trouble sitting still, the medics answer is to pump them full of drugs so that they are calm at school. The problem there however is that when they get home, they cannot sleep, they cannot sit down, they can become aggressive etc because of all that pent up energy. However, with a slightly corrected method of teaching, efforts at keeping the brain busy, time to run hell for leather around the room and taught calming techniques, the need for drugs reduces quite dramatically in a lot of cases.

Another example, an autistic child struggling with being in a supermarket will scream. The usual reaction from the parent is to remove their child from the cause of the screaming, thus teaching the child that if they find something uncomfortable, that if they scream they will be removed from that setting (plus it doesn't actually teach them coping mechanisms).

My method was to find a quieter area of the supermarket away from people and noise, reassure them they were safe, kept the shopping time to a short period but NOT abandon the shopping excursion. Over time, I lengthened the amount of time we spent in the supermarket, always constanting reassuring them they were safe until we got to where we are today.....we can go shopping.

I did however, make sure that at no time did they become very distressed, that would have been cruel and self defeating but gradual increments in time (and I mean gradual, very very gradual...it was a very long process), eventually won the day.

I know the above will not work for every autistic or ADHD child and it is a lot of work, much more than what you would normally do with an autistic child but it has worked with mine and allowed them to be able to cope much more with normal life than they would have done if I had followed what I had been told when they were diagnosed.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Definitely from Aladdin!

Advance best wishes to Gen for Thursday.

Glad to hear the tonsils are improving slightly with chocolate, DG :p

Good luck with the mortgage, chewy - if you want to source a broker, the peeps on the mortgage board suggest going to unbiased.co.uk (or .com), switching off the sponsored content link, and then searching.

So...in my first job I had a stakeholder pension for the last two years I was there 2003/4. I paid in 2% and my employer paid in 2%. Total annual contribution was about £1,200. So max paid in was £2,400.

I got an annual statement in the year after I left which was quite unclear but seemed to suggest that contributions were still being made by my ex-employer. I phoned them up and told them that this appeared to be happening and that they should check. They checked and confirmed that there were not.

I then didn't get another statement until today. Basically I had it registered at my parents old address because I was moving house every year or so. When they moved I forgot to get it changed. Eventually I got around to conducting the provider and getting them to update their records.

Got the statement today - fund is worth £21,000.

This seems literally impossible - it is just invested in the fund manager's rubbish uk equity accumulation units. The annual performance over 10 years would have to be something approaching +25% compound for that to happen, I think?

What should I do next? The only thing I can think is that the pension company might have made an administrative error. I suppose I should contact them and ask them to check. The current statement says that the performance in the last year is investment growth only - no contributions so whatever has happened isn't still happening.

Any big update is unlikely to be before the weekend anyway.
I need to work out what to do next, as that stuff is fairly general. IE getting an AIP, survey, what insurances I'm going to need etc...

We are making it up as we're going along - we have put the offer in without actually having anything in place, have now decided first direct is the way to go so will be starting the mortgage application with them imminently aiming to get an AIP soon as we need to know whether first direct will lend if not alternative plans needed. Solicitor and survey I haven't even thought of yet but we are waiting for the chain to assemble.

    This is my dichotomy.
Across the next 7-8 weeks I have fixed rate savings maturing that'll cover 50% ish (depending on any agreed price if I go ahead). Between june-december there will be another 30k plus maturing for use. I'll still have 40k easy access, & I've accounted for the new car I'm still waiting on.

My preference is to have as small a mortgage as possible, & then as things mature wipe off bigger tranches of the balance.

I'm thinking that if I can get it all paid off asap, I can start squirrelling for improvements, next car etc etc,.

Same here although OH does not seem to be on board with my budget of £200 for furniture and doing each others' haircuts to save money. My aim is to try to pay it all off in 10 years but I will need to get a new job if that is really going to happen.

I'm even more glad that I'm not purchasing right now. You guys really know how to make a girl feel conscious about the size of her mortgage! I'll be delighted if I make it to the end on my 5 year fix in one piece and in not too bad shape for finding something after that. Depending on if I need to take any career breaks (which I'm hoping I will at some point...), I might well need my full 30 year term. I guess I'd be bored if I didn't have to go to work...

We'll not be paying off early nikkster.

Even if we had a windfall it would go into something else to do here.

We all have different finances and ways of balancing them. Michaels said earlier he sees no need to pay off early, he's right for him probably.

Lj wants to pay off ASAP, and so that's for him.

I'm toying with the idea of taking the £2.20ish in change which I've found around the house (not mine, that is all kept safe!) to the bank on Saturday as it's the 1st and asking them to put it against the mortgage. I was going to do it last month but decided to savour the suspense for an extra month :rotfl:

Edit: not mine as in was left behind by previous occupants down the sofa etc., not that I pickpocket my guests!

It would cost me more than £2.20 in petrol to get to the bank and parking!
