I don't really understand why trampolines fly. The jump pad is holey, so why doesn't the wind blow through them?

    Think about fabric.

It has 'holes' in it. Compare less holey felt with fine 'holey' chiffon of linen. Both blow in the wind, just one wafts more. If it were sealed and not holey it would go in lighter breezes, but even unwound rope can go walkabout in wind.....

When I've seen a trampoline flying (which has only been on TV I'm glad to say), it has reminded me somewhat of the film of Neil Armstrong flying the lunar landing module.

They both fly awkwardly and instably (is that a word), but do seem to take off with a bit of a woosh.

Our friends love this so much, they just cry out 'trampoline' for no reason.

I love that the guy gets accused of being 'pished'. It's relatively unusual, although we seem to be collecting evidence that suggests to the contrary.

Interesting article on human genetics and proving major movements of people... I found it interesting, thought others, especially zag, may also

We went out with my mate who comes over from England each year for lunch. We went here:

    http://www.botanicrestaurant.com.au/

It was extremely good. The food was excellent: I had kingfish ceviche (they rather pretentiously called it carpaccio) followed by a nice piece of wagyu beef. We had a fantastic table, the one at the end there with a view of palm trees and the creek that runs through the gardens and indeed was the reason for the gardens being sited there:

There aren't any windows so the breeze was keeping us cool although it did mean I got slightly rained on!

The service was comically bad. It was very slow and they just didn't bring stuff we asked for. We could have made a fuss but it was more fun to laugh at it.

It's been a horrible weekend vis-a-vis the weather. Incredibly humid and raining. Yuck. We're in for a week like that too. Hopefully the humidity will die back a little.

We do need the rain but why did it have to come when my mate was over?

Hope all the nice people survived/are surviving the storms without too much pain. They've been all over the news here. My son had football/soccer grading this morning and that was most of what the chat was about. I think the Aussies find it amazing that you can flood like that with a slow and steady accumulation of water. Most floods in Aus come from torrential downpours over a few days.

    Nice!
Would there be a smoking ban in an roofed, but otherwise 'open' space like that?

The chairs look a bit uncomfortable...

Comically bad service is funny. We once got served main meal before starters, that made us laugh.

That's just become dangerously funnily popular here too. I think' oh yah taddy, did you get (that) ' is also pretty funny.

The smoking ban is pretty relaxed in Aus compared to the UK.

There is a covered terrace there where you can smoke which is on the LHS of the picture.

Most pubs have an area where there are fruit machines under a roof with 4 walls but a lot of breeze coming through where you can smoke plus a terrace with a roof ditto. If you allowed smoking throughout your restaurant/bar it would be commercial suicide in most of Sydney regardless of the laws.

The chairs were fine, no problems at all and I do suffer a little from a bad back.

That's a really good effort. What did you say?

The service we had was utterly charming whilst being completely incompetent. The worst thing about it is the wait staff make well over $30 an hour on a Sunday as that's the minimum wage for waters on a Sunday in NSW. Competence should be the minimum we could expect in return.

Glad you had a good time Gen. Funny you should say about the flooding. Before I went to bed last night had an email from concerned cousin in Hervey Bay, worried about how we were all doing with the flooding and sinkhole.

I was glad to be able to put her mind at rest, but also to say how lucky we are in this country that our flood water does not come, as hers did, with the added headaches of poisonous snakes or crocodiles.

Apparently big parts of Qld, including bits that were practically washed out two years ago, are now in severe drought and they have swung the other way, to being very fire aware (probably the Aussie default position to be fair).

She has to harvest rainwater there as off grid, so have written back to check they are ok in that respect. If not, they have to buy water and bring in by tanker, which is very expensive. As lir has said many times, made me realise how lucky we are here.
