I really don't get people who talk about being off work for a day or two and bored - there are so many hundreds of things I can think of that I'd want to do in any spare time I have that I think they should enjoy the time and make the most of it!

My theory as well! besides never getting to the end of the to do list, I never get to the end of the wish I had time for list either.

This really made me wonder. I think it's due to immature thinking and a distrust of the society our parents were passing on to us. When I was a kid there were only 30 democracies in the world. The free countries of "the west", plus 3 in Asia and 1 each in Africa and South America. Everything else was a colony or a dictatorship (either miltiary or communist). There always have been plenty of people who while enjoying living in prosperity and freedom can see the shortcomings of western economics and it was trendy to think that some other way of life was the antidote.

I suppose that communism would seem like the most different system you could have and therefore it must be the answer since if you don't like your current situation, and if you're a hothead because you're young, you should run as far away as possible in the other direction. Its fans would just ignore its own set of obvious shortcomings.

The generation that fell for this are now senior enough to be in politics, but times have changed. The younger pols we've had since Tony are a bunch of inexperienced eejits who I wouldn't trust to run a bath, but if they have one saving grace they managed to miss out on the self-delusion that swept through the 60s and 70s. :D

Zag, I love your way of thinking things through.

@Single Sue, I hope you can get your chair sorted, either by fixing or sorting out a replacement.

@ukmaggie - I feel I should whisper. I hate gardening, napalm and concrete sound good to me. Sorry:o

A few thoughts, seek a referral now so that if you are on the waiting list, entitled to have a long term provision and seek a short term solution (including the repair...nice offer).

What stops you applying for disability benefits, and a badge?

I am really surprised/worried that you are not in receipt of these as a regular wheelchair user :( It sounds like you are struggling with the condition without adequate healthcare input or advice. As you are assertive when it comes to the boys needs, you need someone (including your GP) to support you.

Can people on the benefits board offer more specific advice?

It's just plain boring personal pride to be honest, using a wheelchair on longer walks is just about acceptable to me but going the whole hog and applying for disability benefits is rather too much for my pride to take :rotfl:

The badge, I did get myself round to thinking of applying, even did an application but then fell at the hurdle of getting a photo done, the delay in getting one done meant that the silly pride got in the way again.

I know I need a bit of assistance but it's just that by receiving any 'extras' is almost like a confirmation I need help....and I don't like admitting that. I still don't see myself as disabled, just someone who needs to use mobility aids to get about.

James is the same, there are people with EDS who have much less impact from their illness, use wheelchairs, claim ESA and DLA (or PIP) but he won't.

So it is not lack of knowledge (I know the disability stuff inside out) or lack of assertiveness, just being pig headed, stubborn and too worried about my own pride.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I just wanted to say, "Thank You" to you guys for your support over the past few weeks. I'm not sure what happened to me really but it wasn't much fun.

It was made immeasurably easier by your kind words. Thank you.

Sue, please consider asking for and accepting more help. You know you worry about the effect James's pride has on his long term prospects - you post on here that you wish he would be gentler on his body so that he gets to continue using it more fully for longer. So perhaps letting go of a bit of your pride and getting a badge and some benefits would be the best way of setting James a good example so that he can be encouraged to let go of some of his pride too.

You need to try to reframe the badge and benefits as "a bit of assistance for people who use mobility aids to get about" not just as "help for disabled people".

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Glad we made a difference. That is how friendship is supposed to work, regardless of whether the friends are mainly pixels or face to face. :)

When I go through on your link, I don't get the info so I search myself and the info is there.

The second one went on the market in August at £249k, went under offer October, fell through in December and priced reduced a few days ago.
I've noticed PB hasn't been "right" for awhile. I went and looked to see if I was "working in a bee" and couldn't see that option. I am certainly logged on as the same user I've always been (so it wasn't that I wasn't logged in or anything).

Anyway, next I found a random option to compact the database - and started that just before 12:30am..... and it said it'd take awhile the first time ... and it did...... at 2.30am it was still running, at 4.30am it was still running. I ended up nodding off... and woke up at 6.50am and there was some message on the screen, but I couldn't see it to read it, so thought "s0d it" and did a reboot anyway.

I then had a shower, but now need to go back and see if things have changed/improved, or if there's anything else I can poke... or maybe reinstall it.

And I know everybody's thanking me for saying nothing .... because I realised that anything I'd say would be the wrong thing, so I kept quiet :)

    I was thinking of you, just daren't type as I'm uber-cr4p :)

    I'm improving :)

Well thank you for saying nothing and thinking a nice thing.

The above certainly wasn't the wrong thing. I think you express yourself in writing better than you think you do.

Yes, that's how I found my link. I was looking to see if the mill that was at auction had been on the market since, etc.

I think that's just on this thread, as I am 'used to' being here, so settled down etc .... so less likely to make a faux pas.

Put me on another board and I can still successfully be misunderstood :)
