He tried to speak to the police, but as he didn't speak English they left him to it as they had no idea what he was saying.I was following this in the London papers about a missing Romanian tourist who got separated from his son on the underground. He was found alive and hopefully well after four days.

Was offered sandwiches by Londoners but didn't have any Engiish. Quite proud that locals looked after him but embarrassed that nobody got him to the poilice or to a anyone who could help him.0 -
Have you joined MFW yet? They seem a very friendly bunch when I go over there for a lurk occasionally. Some of them are very hard core, but they seem to accept all sorts whether they're throwing every penny at it or just trying to pay off a bit extra. If I had a normal mortgage that I could overpay without disadvantaging my dad, I might consider joining myself. (Tahlullah - your sig says you're one of the MFWs. Am I right in my description?)
Now I want to join in the discussion, but I've got too much to get done this evening. Will try to watch it on catch up soon. Expect some belated comments about grey decor maybe some time tomorrow or maybe Thursday evening.
The previous owners of my house had done the utility room in a dark gun metal sort of grey. I think utility rooms should have a light, bright, clean feel to them, and gun metal doesn't do it for me. I painted the walls pure brilliant white (although I never got round to doing the doors of the two under counter units in there, so they're still dark).

I am soooo pleased. This has been very long overdue. Am hoping the school will finally get its act in gear.
I peek at MFW. Don't think I'll join though. I'm aiming to overpay as much as I can (long fix, but should probably try and make a bit of progress before that ends...), but need to spend a bit on the house too (see Doozer
) and rebuild some savings. I don't earn enough to do all of those as quickly as I would like...
I ended up missing most of the interior design programme... gave my mum a call
Will try and pay better attention next week.
Agree totally about the school stuff - well done DS! I hope that things will improve now (about flipping time).0 -
Yes LydiaJ, I am a MFW. Joined last Augustish, and got motivated by some posters who have been very friendly and supportive.
The most influential part of my decision making was down to the type of mortgage I have. If I had a bog standard mortgage, I may have chosen a different path. But, I also read other boards on how to save money on everyday living, which allows me to save for the things that matter to me, like reroofing and buying my new car.Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

Plumber said that bathrooms were going grey rather than brown. Problem is if I replace hall floor with tiles I want them to flow through to the toilet. Would need to be brown tiles to blend with the wood floors in 3 rooms off the hall.
Cleaned the grout around the kitchen floor tiles, it came up really well. Problem is my test patch was in the middle of the room - so now I have to do the whole kitchen. A lot of kitchen= a lot of work.
Deciding we may preserve the existing toilet walls and floor and replace the toilet itself (current one has waste pipe visible and cistern lid has a number of cracks under the glaze) and replace the sink taps (brass plating badly peeled)..open mind at the moment.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I find the over-ernest MFW scary. A bit like a dieter turning anorexic.
Plus mathematically it makes more sense to build up a pension at a younger age, than clear a mortgage and then start a pension.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Seconded. If you're treating a house as a financial asset to finance your old age as well as your home, you'll end up compromising and owning a house that'll be second-rate at both. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
On the subject of books... have been listening to audio book of 12 Years a Slave. Not finished yet, but it is beautifully read and really gets across the eloquence of the author. I would imagine the written book is pretty special too. Yes, there are some hard core MFWers out there. But it's like anything, you participate to the level that suits you. I am certain that if I went to the extreme, then I could pay off the mortgage within 1 year, but I want a life.
There are many people who do not have a pension, but are putting alternative plans into place, such as buying more than one property so they have both capital and rental income to supplement the state pension when they get it, for what it's worth. The difficulty is with those who have no plan beyond the house they currently live in and a reliance on an ever reducing pension pot.Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

They only need to get one word ' Romania' then arrange talking him to consulate where someone would be able to workout what was being said.
Is it me or is lack of resourcefulness becoming increasingly common? I despair of it in myself, I'd like to think a copper could work out a pretty easy think like 'distressed foreign guy...where's he from...say country names at him till he nods, then take him to consulate or enabassy or areange translator.'

I'd discount fashion for flooring. Flooring in hard surfaces is IMO more 'serious'.
If you want brown go brown. And decorate accordingly. It will be fine.
.
Overall, what is your preference for the wooden floor: preserve or go back to scratch at replace?
For rooms off the hall, depending what they were, I'd be a bit more flexible maybe. E.g. Loo I'd be prepared to put down a different floor tile. Maybe a key might be to
