Given you are here LIr I think there must have been some sharing of passion ;)

It didn't last long. My mother used to talk about this with me most inappropriately when i Was rather small. After my father saw her as a mother he didn't see her as a lover. She always told sling and I no o risk having men in the delivery room. I didn't even come out the traditional route!

This was one fo the first clues we had about DS. Couldn't figure out why there was such resistance to such nice clubs.

Our first clue with youngest was having a stone like toddler in the buggy, taking no interest in anything or anyone....the second was the trying to scratch the eyes out of the very nice old ladies who would come up, touch him and try to talk to him from about 3 inches away. It was about the only time he became animated and lost the stone statue affect.

Well actually, we knew something was up before then, when he lost the speech he had developed and became non verbal and lost interest in his toys.

With middle, we had no clues, we thought he had ADHD (he had been diagnosed at age 2 which had then been retracted when he was 4) and was just an in your face, bombastic child. It was a real left field experience when he got the Aspergers diagnosis.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I knew a bloke who commuted fom the east midlands to Surrey. Left home at 6AM and got home by 8PM. He never saw much of his family. We weren't surprised when he came to us to say he was looking for work closer to home. We were baffled how he managed it for the time he did.

My Dad quite often kept hours like that during the working week - in terms of leaving at 6am and back at 7.30pm to 8pm. But he wasn't commuting far, just half an hour or so each way.

He managed it for years, and still works pretty hard now. Because he's a very energetic and focused type, we did still see a lot of him, he was child-active all weekend, and once we were older, often played chess or similar with us in the evenings. But the main child-carer was my mother.

I find it sad when people with kids see little of them because they put their jobs first. I wonder if it is a class thing, if you are used to the nanny / public / boarding school concept then you expect to devolve responsibility for them to others?

I'm not sure that's necessarily right. My Dad never went near a nanny or boarding school as a child.

Family life worked for my parents, and their children. They were a team, doing different things often, but we never doubted they were doing it together.

I think the key thing is things work differently for different families.

While inverse snobbery about schooling and parenting choice is the more popular sentiment is doesn't mean its the righty one for any given family. All the nice kids, for example, that I have met, have been delightful, and seemed ok despite being from different 'care providing' situations.

I actually wish there was a "luxury" moneysaving board on here.

Start a thread somewhere on MSE and see what happens.

My tip is to travel on a budget airline for short haul flights and spend the money saved on upgrading the hotel chosen.

I think a luxury items board is a great idea. For me, it's something that boils down to research, research, research; whether we're talking about flights, jewellery, a new car or something else. Perhaps uniquely with this group there's also another dimension when looking at the cheaper end of the spectrum, the very real threat of real vs fake.

Go for it H, it is a brilliant idea.

  • I've felt rubbish this weekend - some sort of random viral infection, headache, swollen glands, sore throat, slight temperature. I've spent a lot of it resting, and fortunately, I'm not in court tomorrow.

There's a thread in the Arms that links to this paper about thrift culture and what it's for. Bit of food for thought in it.
