The reason there are great songs with great music and rubbish lyrics and none the other way around is because the human voice is just another instrument and part of the music - so it doesn't really actually matter what is being said.
Have you ever heard a great song in a foreign language that you can't understand but you love the song anyway?
It's always the music - particularly melodies- which drive and make the song.0 -

Hehee, we wake each other up quite a lot. We have one of those smug coupley jokes. Always same phrase. Tbf, its usually me waking him up and he's always very good natured about it:D0 -

I disagree, its often, but not always the case. (IMO, and it is of course in the ear and mind of the listener......and perhaps it depends on balance of arts in ones appreciation....what one favours?)
Really talented music writers can tell you without any lyrics what's going on. vivaldi's four seasons is excellent at this. If you ride or hunt you can here the hunting in autumn, you can hear the rain in summer (which btw, is one of my weak at the knees pieces of music....:o)
Otoh, when you think about aretha singing respect, its a fabulous song, but a key part of the song and success is that people latch on to is the word. RESPECT and the empowerment the lyric adds to the want of the music is part of the credibility of the whole.
One of the wonders of the art of song writing is its where the art of music and writing can become greater than the sum of their parts when they are both at their best. When that happens, and the true magic is pretty rare, its phenomenal. The one isn't greater than the other in such circumstances.
Edit: I forgot a really important point.....as a vocalist, when singing in a language you might not be wholly au fair with you still have to understand what you are singing. Otherwise you cannot impart or understand the meaning of what you are singing. I found the same as an instrumentalist. I like to think as a performer what people are hearing benefited from my appreciation and understanding of that. That's part of why I think instrumentalists should know lyrics,.....because it can matter, it can be part of the whole message conveyed, or expected.0 -
Songwriting is akin to witchcraft in my opinion.0

OK - another one for the poll 'Never realised LemonJelly was a band until it was mentioned a couple of pages back'
At some point this morning between 7 when the TV said all was fine and 8.25 when I got to the station first Capital Connect decided to stop running all trains so I have been lucky enough to smaple the delights of Hatfield this morning and get in 45 minutes late. I wonder if there will be any trains home?
No is the answer!
I ended up driving OH to a tube this morning. The only day this month when he needs to be in London. Grr!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. My definition of art is roughly along the lines of .. "could I do it? if I can, it's not art"
Stuff like un-made beds, spreading elephant !!!! on paper and all stuff like that that anybody could do is definitely not art. It's b0ll0x0
