Dotted line boss introduces himself and says, "I'm big boss and you report to me on X, Y and Z. By the way chewy looks after A, B and C and you will meet him when he gets back from holiday." So poor newbie has absorbed all that and assumed that chewy is the colleague in charge of A, B and C and they both report to big boss.
No, what happened is big boss said "hello I am big boss etc" and didn't mention me at all. I arrived a week later and just started 'managing' him without explicitly stating that I was his manager. That is what caused the confusion as I just assumed he had been told.

I thought it would be something along these lines. It seems to me quite understandable that he might spend the first 6 weeks working out what he's supposed to be doing, without worrying about his official relationship to the various people telling him what to do.

But then I've never had a manager in the business sense of the word of somebody who to whom you report what you've been doing. I have a head of department. She chairs department meetings, and does my annual review. She's also the person I go to if there's a problem. Apart from that, I'm left to get on with the job under my own steam; I liaise directly with other teachers teaching parallel classes, and the only reporting I do is to parents.
As I set of to get for from the station the vet called about big dog.

    Its GREAT NEWS!

The results are that there is very low likely old of a recurrence of that cancer.

Phew. She finished her post op drugs today too. :).

Wonderful news. Please give her an extra cuddle from me and DD. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

That's not definitive, although it does raise concerns.

Hob left on? I've done that. DW has done that. Even the kids have done it.

Taps left running? I've done that. DW has done that. Even the kids have done it.

Horse gates? We don't have the same opportunity, but otherwise ...... :)

I'm not trying to poo-poo your concerns, but you do need to make allowances for normal ageing.

With dementia, though, it's not just that these happen with worryingly increasing frequency, but there's also something wrong with the reponse when they do happen, which gives the family a nagging feeling that something doesn't add up. It usually comes from the cumulative effect of seeing the person in dozens or even hundreds of situations, any one of which would be insignificant, but which nevertheless combine into something that's hard to ignore.

I think my mum handled her dementia pretty well. She did well at recognising when she wasn't competent to do certain things safely any more, and withdrew from them. I remember when she told me that she still wanted to spend time with my kids but didn't feel she was fit to be responsible for them without another adult present. I hadn't seen enough evidence to have come to that conclusion at that stage, but she knew, and she didn't want to put my kids at risk. She also did well at remaining reasonbly cheerful and consenting to things that were necessary even if they weren't very pleasant.

I like to think all of that came from her experience of caring for her mother who had Alz. At least, if that's the reason, then it gives me hope that I may be able to be comparatively reasonable when it's my turn, so that my kids' experience of caring for an elderly parent isn't any more dreadful than it has to be.

Belated Happy New year to all NP's

I've just returned from Australia having been there to watch the Test matches in Melbourne and Sydney. Even the Aussies felt sorry for me! Luckily I did manage to spend a few nice days in Tasmania over the New Year. I now hold the dubious privilege of having been to five Test series 'down under' and seen nine matches, all of which we've lost. Unfortunately I had to miss the previous series due to family commitments, and (of course) that was the one we won :rotfl:

I'm sorry I missed you mystic_trev. Mrs Generali hasn't been well and that's taken up a lot of my time. Perhaps we can meet up when I return to the UK in December.

Gen. The yeast thing is a point of debate. They said no marmite etc, but that white bread is a staple....which of course is yeasty.....

I haven't yet had marmite or Vegemite because ,......well, I just haven't. The idea of it without butter is a little ...blah. But I have had poached eggs on toast with marmite and no butter in the past, so might try that for a savoury and roundly umami hit.

    Guinness is out....no alcohol. :(

I will get my head round it eventually I know. It feels very unnatural though, and very unpleasant.

Bread made using the ABC process (ie most supermarket bread) will likely have no yeast in it. The bubbles in it, AIUI, come from an air hose.

If you had beef stew made with Guinness then that would hit the spot perhaps..? That was what I had in mind.

On a price-equal basis I'd like that. I don't need "to drive" to feel all important. I drive to get to places. Sometimes getting to places is really boring when all you're doing is sitting in a chair, holding a wheel, for 2-3 hours at a stretch..... dull.

I'd rather curl up in the back and have a snooze.....

    That's like driving over here.

I've driven Mrs Generali and the Generalissimos up to Brisbane a few times. That's 11 hours of driving on mostly dual carriageway but a few stretches that still go through towns. The passenger stays awake to keep the driver awake.

We all go downhill after about age 30, so a certain amount of deterioration is to be expected. I'm certainly much slower than I was 30 years ago. If your mum can easily pass the MMSE, as you say she can, maybe there is not all that much to worry about?

I read something recently which said that all health care for 40+ year old patients was essentially palliative.

I'm amazed there's no Aus equivalent of the US Florida - Virginia 800 mile motorail/autotrain. A monster of a train by all accounts

I take comfort from the life of Run Run Shaw, coproducer of one of my fave movies, Blade Runner. Just passed away at 106.

Big interstate trains are seen as luxuries over here, akin to a cruise.

Blade Runner is one of my favourite films. Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep is likely to be a big theme over the next decade IMHO. Have you read about the companies that are putting up private spy satellites? Fascinating stuff.
