During the drains problems a few years ago a massive electric storm struck a piece of stock fencing, fizzled around fifty feet, fried one of our rams and went right past two workers who were standing in six inches of water and other stuff.
That was scary.
I've also had lighning hit my house once, and that isn't fun (thank god for Benjamin Franklin and lightning conductors)“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Once been in a house struuck by lightening, it was very loud and more of a bang than a rumble, luckily it had a conductor rod, the same flash also hit a tree about 50 feet away in the garden and split it open, the force is incredible.I think....0

I remember driving down the motorway in a storm, & saw a car being "hit" by lightening.
One of the most awesome things I have ever witnessed.
In other news, I just did a quote for car insurance. Am currently driving round a 12+ year old car that I'm looking to move on in the next 2-3 months. Despite having decided what car I'd like, I've put off getting an insurance quote, mainly as I worried it would be too high & make me consider buying a different and/or much older car.
Turns out insuring a car that's only 2 years old & has a value approx 28x my current car will cost about £20 a year.
Bizarre. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

If you do have a claim, the third party liability will be the same whatever car are driving at the time and modern cars have features like ABS that make a crash less likely. Plus drivers of new cars may be more precious about their new toy.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. My barrister (who is admittedly not at all junior) is amazing. He's brilliantly intelligent, phenomenally good at reading people, staggeringly quick to identify and articulate the most important point of a matter, and comprehensively knowledgeable about his field. I'm sure he's paid shedloads, and I think he's worth every penny of it. (Fortunately it is LNE's insurance company who is paying for him, not me.
)
All barristers are "juniors" unless they are QCs - so you can get some remarkably elderly juniors wandering about! Many very good juniors don't ever end up taking silk, and stay juniors until they retire. I'm glad you've found a nice, helpful and knowledgeable barrister to help you deal with nightmares.Absolutely. Those who have beliefs that they are passionate about usually hope that their children will continue in the same beliefs, and also know that it's more straightforward for them to do so if their spouse shares those beliefs. That doesn't have to imply a value judgement that a partner who doesn't share the beliefs is "not good enough" as a person - it's more a fear that marrying "out" will draw the family member further away from the cherished beliefs, or perhaps that it will lead to conflict and disagreement in the marriage or about how to bring up the children. Notice how NDG mentions that NDB's family have been much reassured that Isaac speaks Hebrew and understands Jewish festivals etc.
Most Jews, catholics, etc etc are quite capable of being friendly to a family member's partner, even if it saddens then that the family member hasn't chosen differently. I quite understand why NDB's more religious cousins would wish that he wasn't "lapsed and secular" but accept that since he is, it's quite natural for him to have chosen a delightful partner without regard to whether she was Jewish or not.
My mother is unusual in that she is genuinely interested and involved with OH's religion and religious belief. She sees it as a positive advantage that no-one wants to whip her eldest daughter and grandson(s) away at Christmas time and similar!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Good Morning, back in the digital world again.
...
The funeral for Mr Bugs was last Friday. It was a lovely service, humanist, held by a celebrant who managed to sum up Mr Bugs very well. Everyone said how much they had enjoyed the service. Then we all decamped back to the pub; Mr Bugs had left money behind for his funeral, so it went towards a good buffet and a free bar, I'm sure he would have approved.
I hope everyone had a good festive season. Sorry there isn't much chance of me catching up on the last two weeks as today will be spent trying to catch up on the mountain of invoicing from before Christmas.
Hope you're looking after yourself bugs!:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
It appears that the chocolate concrete I made pre-christmas was a hit. 2 people have asked for some, with another requesting some for their birthday. I "bribed" the 2 who've asked for some because they had some of my stuff, at least I've got it back...
The gingerbread was awesome too - I'm annoyed I didn't realise until it had almost all gone. I'll have to make some more of that too next week (when time allows). It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
What's chocolate concrete lemon jelly? Is it like soldiers fudge, or rocky road maybe?0

Welcome Rachael
I'm a divorced mum of 3, one who is at uni, one in 6th form (and is a musician) and one in his last year of GCSEs. The two younger ones have forms of autism plus other varying disabilities, the older one takes after his old mum and has a connective tissue disorder.
I love mushrooms, live in outer Herts (also known as the Suffolk coast), not a scientist but do love science and maths, not Jewish but it is in my ancestry and I can also be a bit weird. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

Oh I see. I didn't realise "junior" was a technical term like that. Thanks for explaining. No, he's not a QC. Judging from the dates on his CV, he must be about 60, so he's evidently one of the "elderly juniors" you describe. Picking him is one of many things I think my solicitor has done well for me.neverdespairgirl wrote: »My mother is unusual in that she is genuinely interested and involved with OH's religion and religious belief. That fits perfectly with my mental image of your mother as an exceptionally welcoming and hospitable person with plenty of capacity for extra love when new people come along to be part of her wider network of family and friends.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
