Most junior criminal barristers earn less than that.

My barrister (who is admittedly not at all junior) is amazing. He's brilliantly intelligent, phenomenally good at reading people, staggeringly quick to identify and articulate the most important point of a matter, and comprehensively knowledgeable about his field. I'm sure he's paid shedloads, and I think he's worth every penny of it. (Fortunately it is LNE's insurance company who is paying for him, not me. :))

An attitude (or be it for reasons of faith) that those outside the faith are not 'good enough' for their offspring probably does not help endear the Jews to those who are looking for a group to 'blame' for their 'troubles'
It's not as if this is unique to the Jewish faith though, to a certain extent all religions have at least a bit of this and some of them go rather further than being rude about it - I don't remember any "honour" killings committed by deranged Jews anyway...

Absolutely. Those who have beliefs that they are passionate about usually hope that their children will continue in the same beliefs, and also know that it's more straightforward for them to do so if their spouse shares those beliefs. That doesn't have to imply a value judgement that a partner who doesn't share the beliefs is "not good enough" as a person - it's more a fear that marrying "out" will draw the family member further away from the cherished beliefs, or perhaps that it will lead to conflict and disagreement in the marriage or about how to bring up the children. Notice how NDG mentions that NDB's family have been much reassured that Isaac speaks Hebrew and understands Jewish festivals etc.

Most Jews, catholics, etc etc are quite capable of being friendly to a family member's partner, even if it saddens then that the family member hasn't chosen differently. I quite understand why NDB's more religious cousins would wish that he wasn't "lapsed and secular" but accept that since he is, it's quite natural for him to have chosen a delightful partner without regard to whether she was Jewish or not.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

DS goes back to school tomorrow. It has been agreed that he is to give up French and have extra help with his literacy instead. He has been asking me what I think the literacy group will do, and I have been speculating with him. I mentioned at one point that the senco had said she would try to provide some differentiated work for him at times. (She tells me that most of the group are not very able academically, whereas DS is quite bright in a lot of subjects, but dyslexic and hopeless at languages.) He misheard "differentiated" and thought I was saying he would be given "de-French-iated" work. It seemed very appropriate, since he's giving up French to go to the group, but he was surprised there was a word for it! :)

NDG, how does Isaac get on with writing Hebrew, being dyslexic? Or does he just speak it but not write it down?

I used to have it as a child, but put too much milk onto it and the texture would turn me off it... so I hadn't had it for years. But then I thought I'd try it again. I tried the Tesco Everyday Basics ones - they were fine, then I tried the Lidl ones - and they are a slightly bigger size, so better.

It's essential that you use a bowl where two can sit side by side absolutely flat (else it mucks up the milk absorption).

I then sprinkle a spoon of sugar over the top, then very carefully dribble milk frist round the edges, then in the middle - aiming to add just enough milk so that there are no dry bits left, but not making it a horrid soggy mass. Having milked the edges, I carefully dribble milk on the top, so it doesn't knock the sugar off.

I know that 1 pint of milk does seven portions of 2 weetabix.... one OCD day I'll pick up a tiny measuring jug and measure out "just the right amount" of milk rather than trying to pour it from a 2 litre bottle of milk.

I use only whole milk; I tried it with semi-skimmed at my sibling's house and it was vile as the milk was like water.

In Lidl a box of 36 Bixies (their name) costs £2.99 I think.

That's exactly how I do my Weetabix! Side by side, sugar sprinkled evenly across, up to the edges and add the milk slowly so as not to wash it off. Milk to the top but not flowing over the bicuits. Only difference I prefer semi skimmed milk, full fat tastes far too creamy for me.

Wasn't de-french-iated what the US did with Freedom Fries?

All you Androidians, DD2 was playing her recorder earlier and I showed her how autotune in the guitar tuning app showed the notes she was playing. It also then worked when she sang to it. I then thought there must be an app that you could sing or play to and it would transcribe what you sang/played (basically just recording what the auto-tune was showing me. However google has only found one possible, 'scorecleaner' which is only on IOS

Anyone know of a suitable app or able to google better than me to find one? Thanks
    I think....

I have had the joy of working with 'striking' healthcare workers. I really do mean working. My favourite was a Consultant who was also a BMA representative/ (shop steward) who's 'action' was to wear an armband. He was also not going to meetings held for any non clinical reasons, however in a meeting with me (definitely not clinical) he checked his watch and at 5pm took his armband off.

Such people come from mixed backgrounds tending towards middle class, clever people with a fair share of debt, career risk, stressful work and sense of doing the right thing.

The right to do something (such as strike), does not make it right and I loved the way that this sensible man 'lead' on it, it was another instance of demonstrating the difference between National TU positions/politics and the realities of ordinary members and local leaders of TUs.

This protest action was also about 'reward', but not one that was ever going to foster a lot of public sympathy - changes to a very generous final salary pension scheme so that it would be a career average.
