Murder trials are usually quite fast - they are generally about one particular incident, and so usually only take a few days, a fortnight or so at the most. One I worked on as a pupil lasted 4 days, which wasn't unusual.
I remember reading about an Elizabethan jury who heard 11 capital cases in a single day. 2 were acquitted, the other 9 sentenced to hang....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
The police can't go on strike and their average income is in the 30s k - not many barristers would get out of bed for that.I think....0

Most junior criminal barristers earn less than that.
The police can't strike, but as a result of that they have specific mechanisms to deal with disputes so that the disadvantage of it is alleviated to some extent....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Some of my internet banking logons has a bit where they show you an image and a phrase you have inked to the image to let you know you are talking to the banks computers and not another site pretending to be the bank. Just accesssed an account I hand't for a while, the picture is of a kiwi fruit and my phrase is 'with teeth'I think....0

He needs a bath.
He's a dreadful colour now. It seems so redundant trying to sort it out in this weather though.0 -

Additionally, police officers won't have a huge debt before they start. No funding available for barristers' professional exams and limited income during their training period.
The Government likes to display huge income figures for legal aid lawyers but they don't represent what the vast majority of them earn, and don't take account of the expenses which self-employed barristers have either (which are greater than many other self-employed people).
Edit: PN typed faster than me (got distracted watching the end of Sherlock!)0 -
The Bar's less accessible now than it used to be. When my Dad was qualifying, in the late 60s and early 70s, he had almost no money, but he got his fees paid, and a grant towards living costs, and his bar school fees paid from another grant. He was broke, but started working life with no debt.
Now it's far harder for a young man from a working-class family of limited means to become a barrister, and even young adults from families with a decent income start professional life up to their eyeballs in debt....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

It'll be interesting too to see what action, if any, public bodies such as the CPS or local authorities take against any barrister who is supposed to appear on their behalf tomorrow morning in respect of which the case hasn't already been adjourned.0 -
About the kind of Jewish relatives who get upset about Isaac having a non-Jewish parent - do they also get upset about him having parents who aren't married, or are they fine about that?
The more religious lot probably wouldn't recognise any wedding that wasn't an orthodox jewish one. They may also think there is still hope that he may find a nice jewish girl at some point.neverdespairgirl wrote: »Fortunately, the existence of a child who speaks Hebrew, and is taken regularly to Israel to play with his cousins, and who knows about Passover and Yom Kippur and so forth has calmed things down immensely - and the older generation have now died out.
Even the very religious younger relatives don't make a fuss now it's all sorted; they were more fussed when they thought the situation could be changed, and now it obviously can't, they reckon. They were a lot more bothered about a future non-Jewish mother than they are now the position is established.
I don't think they know we aren't married; you use the same word in Hebrew for wife / long-term partner anyway, apparently, so there's no bother about it. Obviously, they know we wouldn't have had a "proper" wedding, but there's never been any mention of it.
My Mama coming to Israel several times, and my Dad once, helped a lot too.
If they haven't warmed to you by now, it is their loss.
In similar situation I have a male cousin who has married "out", the elders of the family mutter that at least they have produced boys who, with a bit of elderly family encouragement, may marry nice jewish girls themselves and thus the (matriarchal) jewish line will be restored.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
