In similar situation I have a male cousin who has married "out", the elders of the family mutter that at least they have produced boys who, with a bit of elderly family encouragement, may marry nice jewish girls themselves and thus the (matriarchal) jewish line will be restored.
An attitude (or be it for reasons of faith) that those outside the faith are not 'good enough' for their offspring probably does not help endear the Jews to those who are looking for a group to 'blame' for their 'troubles'I think....0 -
It'll be interesting too to see what action, if any, public bodies such as the CPS or local authorities take against any barrister who is supposed to appear on their behalf tomorrow morning in respect of which the case hasn't already been adjourned.
Not much they could do apart from report the barrister to the bar council I think? I suppose they could terminate the instructions of all of the barristers who don't turn up but then they will need to get other barristers in to replace them and they may find it somewhat difficult in the circumstances...
If the govt wants to control its legal costs it could always employ salaried barristers itself and also fund a public defenders office like they have in the states.0 -
Well there is I think a list which a barrister has to be on in order to be instructed, but as you say they probably can't end a barrister's entry on the list just for this ...0

It's not as if this is unique to the Jewish faith though, to a certain extent all religions have at least a bit of this and some of them go rather further than being rude about it - I don't remember any "honour" killings committed by deranged Jews anyway...0 -

I recently worked with someone who had spent several years at the CPS. Since his method of instructing barristers was to trawl through profiles on chambers' websites looking for "hotties" I wonder whether you do infact need to be on a list!0 -

There are various lists, yes - there's a CPS list (which I'm on, although I've not prosecuted for years) and the Attorney-General's lists (A, B and C) for civil and public law.An attitude (or be it for reasons of faith) that those outside the faith are not 'good enough' for their offspring probably does not help endear the Jews to those who are looking for a group to 'blame' for their 'troubles'
An awful lot of religious types are funny about marrying out, though. And even the wrong type of the right faith - there has been enough fuss over the past few centuries about Catholic / Protestant marriages, or Shia / Sunni ones.
My own maternal grandfather probably wouldn't have been remotely pleased about OH not being a faintly miserable low-church protestant type, but as he died when I was 9, that didn't cause us any trouble at all....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
The more religious lot probably wouldn't recognise any wedding that wasn't an orthodox jewish one. They may also think there is still hope that he may find a nice jewish girl at some point.
If they haven't warmed to you by now, it is their loss.

Most of them are now very nice to me. Those who sort of sniff a bit in my direction sniff equally at OH, on the grounds that he's lapsed and secular. That's a small minority, though, most are friendly and interesting and great fun to be with....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Yes, found it. Looks as though it's relatively recent.

It's not that recent - I had to go on the CPS list when I first started doing lists at Magistrates' Courts, in 2003.
Edited to add - it did change fairly recently, into the A list, B and C and so forth. Before that, you were just on the list or not on it....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
