We're at the outlaws. I'm watching FIL reading the Daily Mail. Article is "migrants: middle class fears mount"

Perhaps every page is a similar article

I was familiar with her as a poster. (I think a lot of quantities/amounts were posted for effect, in all honesty). I was trying to say more about how people have different ideas on what constitutes good food, but appreciate that I personally can't escape having an opinion on how to spend money.

They were comfortable enough to hold themselves as an example to others with recipes detailing how to eat well on a budget. To me, the recipes are so bad that even trying to use those meal plans, I would have to find other ways to make food edible. Ideally spending more money on it, or if necessity really meant a budget that extreme, changing to different ingredients. If I had to eat like that, I'd be desperate to find a different solution, I wouldn't be satisfied that it was one, iyswim.

Yes, I do SWYM. I wasn't really disagreeing with you - a lot of the stuff on the list does look pretty unappetising, and I don't think her priorities would be the same as mine, any more than you do. I just know I wouldn't have wanted to get rid of Avatar Dog even if money was very very tight indeed, and I can imagine giving up a car might be a big saving, but might also mean that paying the delivery charge was the cheapest way to get a lot of shopping from the shop to the home.
I thought induction was better than gas purely on performance and convenience but the cost seems prohibitive (from memory anyway, not sure whether the price has come down now?). If they were the same price I would get induction over gas, but they aren't and I have a limited supply of money and I would rather spend it on other things, like holidays. Or lager.

You also need to factor in whether you will need to buy some induction-friendly stuff as a result - as I'm sure you already know induction only works with ferrous metals.

I'm perfectly happy with gas. The idea of an induction hob reassures me that I will still be able to have a controllable hob in decades to come, even if the gas runs out (or, more optimistically, if we develop marvellous new ways of generating cheap electricity while gas is ever increasing in cost).
Shaking and rolling isn't a problem. I suppose if you were using a really lightweight flimsy pan it might but if you have got a decent pan with a heavy base then taking it off the heat for a few seconds isn't going to result in it suddenly losing too much heat and once you put it back down you get instant heat anyway. We successfully made pancakes on ours!

Also because the hob surface is flat you can shake quite vigorously by sliding back and forth whilst keeping the pan in contact with the hob if you want to.

    Useful to know. Thanks. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I seem to have locked myself out of photo bucket by thinking I could put my photo bucket acc on dh's new work ipad (delivered today by courier because his work computer battery has failed while he is on holiday).

It doesn't seem you can link two macputers to the same photo bucket account. :(. I think I've lost my pics.

OH saw all that in Luton. It didn't travel this far south.

So glad you said that! I called one of my Herts relatives afterwards to make sure that they were ok and not caught out walking the dog and they said "what hailstorm?"

I prefer to bung the sausages in the oven personally, freeing up a spot for another deep frier for more chips.

Definitely sausages in oven - much more even cooking than in frying pan, as well as less fat.
What I miss, for not having a freezer, is fish fingers. I did buy one box of about 14 of them last year ..... and did eat them all, but it's a pain.

We didn't get induction in the end because of the issues around limited pan compatibility, our rapid halogen warms up very quickly, its disadvantage over gas is the cool down time when something boils. I didn't want gas because they are harder to clean and because burning gas in an enclosed space isn't that great for asthma sufferers.

I don't worry about ease of cleaning. :o Mine is quite easy because everything lifts off, but actually I only bother for bad spills, which don't happen very often. Any little ones I just leave for the cleaner to deal with when Tuesday comes round. That probably means I'm a slob, but I have enough else on my plate, and am on a policy of not doing things I don't really really have to do, to see if it helps me recover from the last few years and get back to normal mental health.

Hey, I was in court today, slaving for my brief fee!

I was in work today too - only for the afternoon, though, and not actually teaching anybody. Did get quite a lot done, though. :)

Michaels - did I read that right that your kids take gifted alcohol into school on non- uniform day?! (confused smiley)

I do this with gifted alcohol too.

I'm puzzled that little kiddies are allowed to go into school carrying bottles of alcohol. I guess at that age you trust them to hand it in.

At DD's school, if the non-uniform day is "donation for tombola" or similar, then the letter says alcohol to be handed in to the office by the adult, and other items to be taken by the kids to the class teacher.

DH and I went to a party (briefly, obviously) this evening.

There was hail here too viva, ut really the weather has been most interesting this evening, hence mentioning we were out, as the sky was amazing and quite odd lightning but couldn't hear thunder, despite putting windows down ( in the rain). For a while I wondered if we were near a train line I wasn't sure of or something.

    Anyway, lots of lightning.

Earlier the kiwi found a jaw bone of an animal in the field. I have not seen this bone yet, DH has it in a bucket for me to look at. Apparently kiwi was having a whale of a time with it. Now that we're home and have undressed the Christmas tree (so much quicker than usual) I suppose I better have a look .

Only the nut crackers to put away now really.

No hailstorm in Surrey/ SW London. Quick thunderstorm at lunchtime. Have walked the dog but he did his business and turned around straight away because of the wind.
Expensive brake work needed on car, straight after Xmas. Ouch!:(

I'd be reluctant to consider the meatless diet if children were growing up on the food mentioned.

Over Christmas I have been involved in negotiations with DS about giving up meat. We have now reached an agreement. I have accepted that he is giving up eating meat from mammals, and he has consented to carry on eating meat from chicken (and possibly other birds), and is happy to take a supplement if I decide that one is indicated. (Question - should I, and if so which kind?)

I have been somewhat surprised at the extent to which other people feel they have the right to tell him that he must eat red meat or else. I would certainly never tell somebody else's teenager something like that. If I was concerned about their eating habits I might have a quiet word with the parents if I knew them very well, but otherwise I wouldn't interfere.

Interesting... when it comes to the personal relationship problems of my friends, I am generally quite a long way towards the "love them enough to say something" end of the spectrum compared with most people I know, but on this question I am coming out much more non-interfering than some people I didn't expect it from.

Tonight he is hungry. :) I am doing sausages and eggs and stuff for DD and me, so asked DS what he would like instead of the meat element. He wants lots of pasta, tuna mayo, fried egg, and cucumber, and happily told me he'd thought through whether he'd got all the right food groups before saying what he'd like.

    No hail this far west.

He should be fine Lydia. People like me who really don't cope well easily aren't that common

I'd be be more concerned that as he is not completely veg he might consider fish oils personally and not to much rubbish. ;). The danger is to rely to heavily on things like cheese.

Nutrition is Broad brush strokes but best personalised, random supplementation can unbalance and IMO can do as much harm as good.
